Right, been semi-lurking on here for a while now. Bought a few bits off people for my car but have yet to say hello properly so here goes.

Bought the car off a member end of June this year to replace a Fiesta that went to Germany and never made it back. Done a bit of digging and I believe it has been owned by a few members over the years, RolandRat was one of them for sure.

I chose this car for a few reasons. The first one was that despite it being hundreds of miles from me I knew the car and owner. Second that I had wanted a '6 far a few years and lastly because the price was right!

The car has a LOT of documented history, approx 2" thick and from that I know the car has been looked after pretty well. The rear was lowered 40mm by CG Cars and it has had Richard Longman cams fitted in the past. I don't think they are there anymore though because the head was rebuilt 4 years later, again by CG Cars LOL

As I mentioned before I bought the car end of June, and since then I have put on more miles than it did in the previous 12 months. This is my only car and it will have to deal with 24,000 miles a year. With this in mind I have taken a few days off work to do the following:


Fit KW Innox V1's with top mounts and drop links (replacing the *COUGH* Raceland's on there already)
2x front wheel bearings
2x track rod ends
2x wishbones / bushes / ball joints
ARB bushes
New nuts / bolts / washers from Pug used
BakerBM top engine mounts
Properly sort the oil cooler pipe routing
Fit BMC CDA if it turns up in time
Refurb the wheels back to silver
Refit the exhaust so it doesn't foul the rear bumper


I think the thermostat will need replacing before the weather turns too as the water temp sticks at 70 on a run. Oh and I guess when I get to the engine mounts there may well be some welding needed. Attention will then turn to the rear end and a rebuilt beam may be in order.

There have ben quite a few Rallye's changing hands lately and this is just another one of them, but I have to say I love the way she goes and I am driven to get her back to an OEM+ standard.

It will take some time to sort all the mechanicals. I will be doing them first, followed by smartening up the exterior. All that really needs is a new front bumper.

Well that's it really. Hopefully the changes to the suspension / front end will sharpen up the handling a touch but it is really all about me not wanting to work on the car when it is cold outside

Oh yeah, I have one thing that needs sorting. It was the first thing that struck me when I bought the car but have since sort of gotten used to it. The accelerator pedal is too high. It sits level with the brake pedal at rest, and when on the brakes is far too high to heel/toe.

TBH I have not looked into this at all other than to ensure the throttle cable has a little slack in it. Aby suggestions?

Thats a strange one i would of though the pedal must be bent, cause my cable had stretched i could not get full throttle but the pedal was the same height . So

What you thinking to fix the rear exhaust I've tried messing with mine has its burnt my bumper, i wondered if you could get longer hanger rubbers

CJ I sorted the exhaust today. At least I think I did, some miles will tell. 3 rubbers held the back box on and i simply swapped the worn dangly one for the fresh looking one and it straightened my back box up just right. If only I had done it 6 weeks ago.

I've seen this in the flesh if It's the one ash (Rolandrat) used to own.

It was easily the nicest black rallye I've seen and if It's still in similar condition you've got yourself one lovely rallye.

Nice project Barry Thumbs up.

Like I say to many people I see. Yes, they are 14+ years old, but if money is spent on the right parts for a refresh, there shouldn't be any more spending for at least a few years

The car is progressing well, all the suspension work is done but it will be another couple of days till I get to test it. Started the wheel refurb now so won't be driven till that's finished. Freed off a stuck compensator valve while I was at it too.

My BMC CDA turned up today. Thanks to pug_306 for the speedy delivery Clapping

That will be fitted tomorrow along with proper clamps and separators for the oil cooler pipes, doing away with a lot of cable ties.

I may have sourced a good front bumper, no cracks so hopefully good to go straight to paint if the deal comes off. It will be the only thing letting the car down externally once the wheels are done.

Roll on tomorrow!

Lovely motor has it got the shadow chrome cyclones on it ? Think a guy called glynnrallye owned it before ratty was a very nice car bk then as well

Hi mate, no it was on white cyclones when I got it. Going back to silver, though now I have done the colour coat it looks like it may be a dark-ish shade of silver. I will know for sure once the clear goes on!

Yep this was my black Rallye. It was owned by club member Huw Jones prior to me. I bought the car in 2007 and had it until 2009 when i sold it to another club member from Malpas in Cheshire. He owned it a short while then sold it to Ash.

It was on the reg T816 PEF when I bought it. I then put my private plate A8 YEY and then was put on T464 KDM when sold to Ash. I often wondered where it ended up!

I had the head rebuilt by Carl CG cars, fitted a nissens alloy rad, refurb red callipers and refurb 'shadow chrome' wheels.

I also fitted all new pug shocks and Eibach springs, strut brace and ph3 crystal lights.

I missed it straight after selling! So bought another but this time in white. Will try and dig out some old photo's for you. Chuffed to see she's still going strong. Was a really clean car.

That's a great photo Gwyn, and great to hear from a former owner too! The shadow chrome wheels really suit her, and my refurb wheels may inadvertently end up not too far away from that colour.

Perhaps you could clear something up for me. I have an invoice for Richard Longman 270 degree cams in the cars history. Were they replaced with the head rebuild? I'm gussing they were as the idle is rock solid but would be great to know for sure.

Anything else you can think of, throw up or just reminisce would be much appreciated too!Thumbs up

Lovely photos! The paint on the car is so smooth I would swear it has had paint correction in the past. Either that or just a lot of hand polishing by many careful owners

Hi mate, Im not sure on the Longman cams to be honest. They were fitted prior to my ownership. When I had the head rebuilt by Carl Mech Repairs he rebuilt the original for me. So I can only assume they remained unless they were removed prior to my ownership? Either way, she did pull very well. But I was most pleased with the handling, the fresh OE shocks and eibach springs were a great combination for road use. I do know the rear beam was rebuilt by Huw Jones just before I bought it on 77k. I sold it on 113k two years later. Spent a small fortune on upkeep but she was my pride and joy!
