if it has AC you should have two fans

if one is missing you wont get slow speed!
This is exactly what I was trying to say. Smile

Yep if both don't come on when the brown sensor is unplugged then you most likely have a faulty fan. You need to get it fixed so you have the slow speed fans. Do the ac bridge trick and at least you can manually turn them on to max speed whenever you want.

to use A/C Button for Fan override
Disconnect A/c pump electricly
Unplug A/c Pressure switch
then bridge pins in A/c Pressure switch loom side plug, one or the other not both Wink
Bridge pins 1&2 = low speed from both fans
Bridge pins 1&3 = high speed from both fans

Ok so it's been an absolute bas**rd but....I finally have the duff fan motor off and I'm ready to replace it

Dad came round with his multimeter and we tested the plug, it has 2 pins, one positive, one negative I assumed?? We could not get any voltage readings from it that way at all, however we got an instant. 12v if earthed elsewhere, are the fans earthed?

To avioid confusion we got voltage when pulling the brown plug out, one fan going nuts, other dead... Do they use the same earth or could I have a perfectly good fan with a dodgy earth? (If it is earthed via plug)

Cheers

Fan cowling is plastic....

check the small multiplug on the corner, cant remember if the earths meet before the plug, if they dont then it could be the plug, if they do there might be a break in the wiring if there isnt a circuit from the fan plug to earth.

Thanks, so the plug should be earthed? Ie one pin positive, one negative?

If so I defo only have an earth at one fan!? (So there must be an individual earth for each?)

Is that all correct?

the relays switch the wiring so you may not have any connection if the relays arnt powered
if you have the duff fan off put 12v across the socket on the motor see if it spins
hold onto it tight as it starts with quite a kick

Is there a relay per fan? Doesn't appear that way in the manual but then as you can tell I'm learning lol

there should be 3 relays and a fan controller Bitron box on a GTI6 (NOT A RALLYE)
1 relay switches the power to the fans
2-3 relay switches the wiring between series and parallel fans to get your two speeds
the bitron box controls all of the above taking signals from CTS and A/C switches

below is a wiring drawing with the fan loom drawing to the first plug Wink
this is for a GTI6 Not a Rallye

Right ok thanks, I hope I haven't just removed a perfectly decent fan and have a duff relay :-s

Where are the 3 relays you describe above?

I'm embarrassed to say I just cannot Decipher that diagram...

Is there an easy way to test a relay?
Cheers

i would say you have a dead fan yes
the three relays are in the triangle box between the two fans at the top of the plastic cowl

Ok i could actually scream at this point, i've just no idea why i only have 1 fan working..

Here's what ive done:

1) Pull out brown plug
2) Right hand fan not coming on, remove....
3) Test plug for motor - very difficult to get 12v on the multimetre, with the earth else where on the car (e.g slam panel) 12v there, if just using the 2 terminals, no 12v.
4) Replaced duff motor...
5) Cry, new motor doesnt work either....(clearly original fan is fine, but i've buggered it now lol)
6) Open newly discovered box with relays (thanks cully) - 2 green at top, one black below
7) Swap green relays over (just in case they correspond to right and left) - makes no difference, right not coming on
8) pull out black relay below, terminals all manky, clean up, plug back in...
9) No chuffing difference

I've got a track day coming up and no fecking clue how to fix this, arrrgghhhh any ideas gents, i'm stumped. The earth thing is clearly odd but i've unclipped the motor plug and traced the wiring back to the relays at the top of the fan cowling and its all fine...

Help!

Cheers

Fine as in looks ok or fine as in you have actually checked to see why there is no earth from that plug?

Haha indeed, it's virtually impossible to tell where it ends, I think it ends at the relay so will continuity test tomorrow...

In simple terms what does that diagram illustrate in terms of where the wire ends?
