Hi,

I have a sump guard which is currently fitted to the crossmember under the radiator, however it is not strong enough to take the knocks and is constantly having to be straightened out. Does anyone know of anybody that has strengthened this area for a sump guard? I am thinking of replacing the drop section and crossmember from the chasis legs entirely. Any thoughts on whether this is a good idea?

Yep i saw pics of someone who had replaced that cross member for a bit of unistrut a bit lower to lower their rad and i can tell you unistrut is bloody strong in comparison to whats already there

Thanks Niall, I was thinking of a bent piece of steel to form the drop inside the bay and also along the front, then as you say unistrut along the front is a strong as anything! Hopefully will fend off the bumps! Thanks for your help Niall

I grab some pictures of mine shortly.

My new car has the bottom rad cross member reinforced for the sum guard attachment.

My previous setup had mountain ting points welded on to the chassis legs, where they meet the fro the panel area. They dripped down with bolt holes, and the sum guard attached to those.

edThis is the bar I have under there. Nothing will move it, its bloody solid.

And the sump guard.

Needs a slight clean..

As for the car, I fully rebuilt the engine, forged rods, and pistons, race bearings etc. Worked head and bigger valves, big cams, uprated springs retainers etc, throttle bodies, 4-2-1 manifold. running on an omex. 6 speed dog box, Proflex suspension all round, with tubular wishbones on the front, bigger torsion bars and anti roll bar, and AP calipers front and back.

Sounds very nice. Don't ever sell it without letting me know! How do you rate the proflex? I have Leda front coil overs and avo rears. Can't get the front high enough for rough forest events (hence the sump support damage) and even on hardest setting the rear beam is to soft

How did you fix the beam to your chassis legs?

The bit under the rad there, that is attached to the original rad support cross member. It basically boxes that in, it's fixed underneath it, welded on. As said, forms a box there and the whole thing as one piece is very solid.

What liners do you use in the wheel arches? Do you only compete in tarmac or gravel stages also?

Someone used unistrut? That's fine use of work materials!

That gives me an idea...

I only do tarmac. I hit enough on that rather than try and git any more with trees all about!

I did have liners in, that were well cut down. But I've got some good stone chip under there in the right places now, so will probably use no arch liners.

After any particularly wet or muddy events in just whip the wing off and get the steam cleaner in there.

Thanks, The Uni in Unistrut is for Universal, good for cars, scaffolding, shelves and all the stuff it was originally made for!

Its the stripping of the wings I am trying to avoid! That's what I am having to do now.

this may sound....silly.....and i dont think anyone of this forum would expect any less from me.

but would a springy sump guard be better? one that has some elastic give engineered into it before its gets to a plastic deformation state?

on a side note, unistrut IS awesome. i used it in my gti seat sofa set Smile
