Exactly this, you need to ensure the fork goes behind. You can actually see it through a hole in the top of the box as you slide it back on to the engine, it's kind of an experience thing but whilst it's fiddly it's not that hard.

You can check the shaft after your done putting the box back on as if it's right it will have a tiny bit of movement if it's wrong it won't have any

Yeah it does move like an inch maybe 2, it not too hard to move either and springs back and im sure it went in behind the cut out on the bearing!!

An inch or two?

If it's located behind the bearing and the box is flush to the block and bolted up, there should be about 5mm movement on the fork shaft...Yes

Oh well the last pic ture its touching the the cable bracket and it moves back from there about an inch??

isn't there an inspection hole with a plastic cover you can pop off? my 205 be3 box has one

Yeah well I knew straight away as I moved it back it wasnt any where near the release bearing!!! What a tool...bit of a bas**rd to do on your own thats for sure!!! But flew back together after that drive lovely and retaining all oil!! Bonus Thumbs up
