If you've never done it before I wouldn't be building a bottom end to run 400bhp. Particularly if it's already gotta be bored out and honed just get them to assemble it. Not to mention do you know what's acceptable wear on a used crank? How much end float is acceptable, how much piston movement is acceptable, how hard it should be to turn over, if shells are to tight, if the oil pump is in good condition etc etc.

If it was a standard engine and you fancied a go then I'd say go for it but if your talking a few grands worth of shiny forged bits in there I'd be giving it to someone else who's done it a million times before.

I'd also be fitting uprated bearings and rod bolts etc at the same time which I'm sure rich can supply you.

This is good advice you don't want all your shiney tax rebait going poop on you

x3 and then add the court case where the judge can't work out how engines work, which didn't help my case. Buy some books, do some research, take your time, its not that difficult.

Get the machining company to check the crank over when they do the Block, the rest is just nuts, bolts and a few simple measurements.

Also, machining companies make mistakes, if you can't/don't have the necessary equipment take it to someone who has the necessary measuring equipment and ask them to double check the companies work, might not be necessary but I like to be sure...

There is an engine builder local to me who is doing the block so I'll get the crank checked.

As I was saying almost every other seal and bearing will be new so wear isn't a factor on most things. Where possible these will be uprated items

I'm boring the engine .5mm as I can guarantee the seal with the piston which a few people recommend.

Got to strip the engine today, it's in really good condition so it looks like I was lucky on this engine.

Rebuild the head and recondition the oil pump, I've asked Rich so I hope he can do it.

Block is going to the engine builder on Tuesday to be decked and bored out .5mm. Then it's a bit of waiting for the rods, pistons and bearings to come from Rich (Once I get my tax return money!).

I need to get a charge kit first aswell, I have spoke to Mechanical Repairs about one he has but as there is a lead time on the rods I may have to pay for them first to get the ball rolling and then once a charge kit comes up again I'll buy that.

How the f**k do I get the dipstick out the engine, it's right in the way and it's going to get bent if it stays where it is!

Also how do you lock the crank pulley to undo it, I probably should have done it before I cut the belt off! I'm debating putting 36" stilsons on the thing since I'm putting an alloy pulley on anyway, but mine are in work and can't get them until Tuesday

Anybody need a set of standard pistons and rods....

lock the crank via the flywheel, undo the bolt with a big bar.

The dipstick tube thats bent and bolted to the oil pump just twists out. Quite a tight fit. The rest is just pushed in but a very tight fit. I found it easier to leave it on the block whilst building the engine.

Any decent engine builder will get the the crank checked over and balanced with any rotating mass included ? Ie pulley, fly wheel and clutch Thumbs up

If you use a a good reputable engine builder who has experience with the xu lump you should be ok ? But no court in the land will hold them responsible for a failure as as there is too many variables after you pick up it and install it Yes

Cracking answer Rich, I guess some people just think that the only people who can build engines are the people they know. LOL

Lynx have built me some very strong engines over the years and will continue to do so. I have to be the least sympathetic driver and I've run engines for 30,000 plus miles with 7k launches and flat shifting with no issues. Well worth doing properly once than paying out twice in my opinion

I've just stripped it totally and I am now thinking the above. I don't think that Lynx will charge much to build the bare engine (I hope, I just messaged Rich)

It's only really the main bearings, big end, fit the pistons, torque them up and then fit the oil pump and pan, bolt the sump on and that's it. They are rebuilding the head for me so they could fit that the same time then I have something that is good to go (In theory!)

surely if you've stripped an engine, you can put it back together?
