Sam Wilson mistakenly believed the Peugeot 306 was still legal to drive,
despite the missing doors, headlights, indicators, bonnet and brake lights,
because it had a valid MOT certificate.

Not exactly, but I'm a bloody good author when it comes to seeing something on one forum, and starting the thread on another.

Doesn't quite top the journey a friend of mine once made in his 306.

He called me one evening to mention his car had caught fire and only just been extinguished. Naturally I whipped down and pulled a few parts off. Whilst I was doing that he'd arranged for a lad in a sprinter van to pop down and assist. After a quick discussion we'd devised a plan to get rid of it.

A coat laid on the moist front seat, the newly smoked windscreen kicked down over the bonnet and we were nearly ready to go. We didn't have a tow rope, but a seatbelt did the job (albeit only a few foot long) so off they set towing him directly behind a sprinter van with no visibility and melted tyres. He dumped it off outside the scrapyard and dropped by the next morning to advise them that was his car outside, and to rest assured it hadn't been tourched outside overnight. Was probably 10pm gone, but still lucky to not get spotted doing the few mile journey.

lol, this reminds of many years ago I used to work in second hand car sales, to cut a very long story short, a customer had bought a mint mk1 3.0 Granada saloon from us, 2 weeks later he rang us to say the car had been stolen but the police had found, and could he drop it back to us to store it for him while the insurance was sorted. We said yes no problem. Well I'm sure I pi55ed myself, he pulled onto the lot, he was driving the car sat on Birmingham dairies plastic milk create. They had totally stripped the car! He'd had to get some old wheels from a scrap yard as they'd gone, they'd taken all the glass, the doors, wings, bonnet and boot, all the lights, the bumpers, they'd even removed the rear wings! All the interior was gone, including the dash, head lining and sunroof, in fact the only thing they left was engine, gear box and drive train for some reason. He'd driven it 4 miles like that!
