So, for the guys out there who carry out their own work - what do we think is the most pain in backside job on these cars?

Personally, I'm voting the handbrake mechanism on the rear caliper when you're trying to rebuild them...Angry

None of those I find difficult at all, fiddly maybe at some points, checked over three bendix rear calipers a few evenings back whilst supping a few carlsbergs.

That bulkhead grommet is a right c**t though, why they didn't do it like Citroen I don't know, so much easier!

Clutch on an S16 is a bas**rd, even if the assembly itself is the same, everything around it is so cluttered, typically stinking dirty on the S16 too.

The main problem is PSA love story with low quality plastics and pipes adapters designed by Torquemada descended.
Instead of pipe that wrap around it's adapter, it shoved into notorious breakable plastic adapter.

in the TU intake they have the same problem, so i replaced it with brass adapter,
and i'm searching for more reliable solution for the heater matrix,
i found a Canadian company called "Spectra premium", making heater matrix for Lexus, 100% aluminum including pipes,
for 55$ it's a good investment for trouble free maintenance.

Ive said head gasket purely because you spend ages bent over the engine bay and being 6ft5, it gives me a bloody sore back then to top it off, you have to try and lift a nice heavy head out of the car after all that work lol.

Heater matrix for me, it's just a faff!

Carl (CG cars) was adamant he could get a matrix out in 20 minutes, I imagine he uses an angle grinder...

...but heater matrix is a clean job, the rest involve being on the floor / getting dirty hands LOL

clean, apart from the dirty bit of getting the heater box unbolted from down the back of the engine, and removing the wipers from the scuttle panel LOL:

Fitting the rear beam on your own is a nightmare. Another set of hands would have been amazing

I've gone for heater matrix purely because It's a job where other things tend to break.

If rear beam rebuild/service was on there that would have got my vote, absolutely hate them.

Heater matrix was my vote. Really wouldn't want to do another one. Managed to do it though. Disappointed I couldn't completely remove the dash. God knows what was still attached. I couldn't see what it was either way. Also couldn't get the rubber grommet back in that surrounds the pipes through the bulkhead so its kind of half in at the mo. I know how I can fix it but that's another one of those little jobs that's waiting for a day when I can be bothered.

I've dismantled a rear beam i bought on my own, it went smooth until i had to put it
inside my car without help, i managed to do that too, but i needed to pull the last inches that hang outside,
all my muscles hurt, and after the beam was totally inside, i stepped with one leg to the floor and hit my tail bone
with the metal lug near the rear door with all my weight , overwhelming pain was like nothing i knew before,
sweating like a hog and pulse rate skyrocketed i crawled to the car and lay for an hour.

You've missed off 'putting everything back together after completely stripping the shell and engine'.
I'd go with that, hence my 'car' has been sat in the garage for 5 years.

From the list I'd probably say heater matrix
