Looking around at the cars being sold at the minute and there seems to be a certain few that are going for better money than they would have 12 months ago, obviously there is still stuff going silly cheap but it would appear that a nice example may be commanding a bit more cash at the moment, which is nice!

Just seen this on PH, granted it looks to be an absolute minter in the advert but I can't remember the last time I saw a standard car go for circa 3k.

Mint non pink Rallye

A few years ago there was the dealer in the Anglia region that was buying low milers (mainly Rallye's) and getting them sorted (By Carl Chambers IIRC) and selling them at silly monies, that soon stopped.

Then there was Silkys old Bianca that sold last month in about 36 hours, too cheap IMO, could have easily gone for 2k, might have taken a little while longer but looked a good car for the 1600/1700 quid it went for.

Not saying that the 306 will ever command the kind of price that we have seen 205's go for but any increase has to be a good thing LOL

Discuss?

It's a funny one, i sometimes forget how old my Rallye is as i still think it's great to look at and worth the 3.3k i paid for it any day Yes That was nearly 10 years ago though LOL

If anything i would like to think they have hit the bottom and are now close to reaching that lovely classic status Smile

Maybe or i should put mine back to standard rather than creating my own version Hmm

I bought my first RS engined 306 in 2008, I paid 3k for a mint moonstone GTi-6 and thought I had stolen it LOL How times change. Inevitable though I suppose.

Would you rather go for a modified car thats done a bit of mileage but still good nick with everything sorted, or a standard car with lower mileage at a higher price? They all need something doing at some point Yes

I paid £2300 4 years ago for my china. Funny thing is, I've put 40,000+ miles on it and its still in better mechanical and bodily condition than a lot of 3 years old cars. And as such I would even consider selling it for less than £2,000. So... I'll probably be stuck with it for years. Which to be honest, im looking forward too.Smile

Some 306s are worth the higher prices, and some people selling selling cars are being a bit optimistic Yes

When I put my mi up for sale, it will be a bargain, but I'll still make a loss, as all the new NLA parts I have aswell are part of the deal

I also had a blaze in 2005 I bought for £3250. That was a great car. Cambelt let that one down 6k miles after a head rebuild though. LOL

I paid 1600 for my black '99 6 back in November. It's in fab interior, bodily and mechanical condition and only on 90k now. I consider that a great buy.
No plans to get rid any time soon and plan to continually improve it in all ways.

Happy 306 Gti-6 buyer, especially if their value is on the up.
Apart from the effect on insurance.
Ah well!

I paid £3500 for my Rallye just over 2 years ago with 67k on the clock and only two previous owners.

I knew then I was paying way over the odd's.... but I love these cars and it was the best I could find. At the end of the day I think you get what you pay for... go for something cheaper and you end up spending on a beam build/ headgasket/ rust or body work/ ripped seats issues and it soon adds up. I decided to bite the bullet and go for an unmolested example.... as can be seen with 205's its the original cars that attract a premium in time.

Its now on 72k and I rarely use it as (being a sad git) I want to preserve it for when they do become classics.

I think they have hit rock bottom now, many on the cusp will be broken and scrapped which may in time firm up the prices of those that survive. Personally, I think it'll be another 5 years or so before they begin to noticably appreciate.

Does that make them rarer than an Astor then?

A lot of getting good money for these cars seems to be waiting for the right buyer who really wants a good example and is prepared to pay for it, which are comparatively few and far between and aren't willing to spend more than the 650 that would get them a '6 on ebay.

I paid £4150 for my P2 diablo 10 years ago. It had 57K on the clock and was completely original and imaculate with 2 previous owners. Owned it for 8 years and put 75K smiles on my face Smile

It seems to be a familiar story - cars as they get older depreciate, and at first the depreciation is at a reasonably uniform level. And as they hit the bottom, and are essentially worthless, people think they always will be worthless. But then certain people start looking for good ones, and the good cars establish a premium as the condition of cars as they get older increasingly reflects how they have been cared for, while the ropey cars still bump along the bottom and get scrapped. Clean and tidy cars are getting more rare, so are potentially worth more.

As I said elsewhere, the condition of a decent Rallye definitely seems to be firming up. Not by a whole lot, but is there nevertheless. It is probably similar for a really nice standard GTI6 in a good colour.

I also think that car mags, featuring hot hatches, sell cars. Once a car can be called a retro hot hatch, they become more recognised and sought after.

Agreed - even if after reading an article only 10 people of all the readership decide to look seriously for a clean example of a car, they'll be doing it all at the same time and it would have some effect on prices of the cars for sale at that particular time.

On second thoughts, and judging by your recent thread regarding running difficulties - perhaps not. It seems like you got a cheap car, which has nothing but issues. LOL

Buy cheap, buy twice. Yes

I was out washing my 6 on sunday afternoon and a guy who must have been in his late 40's jogged past and back again and said to me 'that's a gti6 isn't it?'

Struck up a conversation and I told him about a few things I'd done to it etc. He said there as cheap as they're ever going to get now which I agree with to a certain extent. He told me next time he jogs past he would leave his name and number on a slip of paper under my windscreen wiper and if I ever wanted to sell to call him firstLOL
