What's this?

That noise is coming from the cam belt area and increases with revs.
Impending doom?

No, never was. It's never snapped a belt or had the head removed. Last belt change was in 2009, this is the first time it's made this noise.

Can a tapper just suddenly 'happen'?

Only if a hydraulic lifter was to fail but to be fair I've never heard of it happening....

Would this theory carry more weight if I were to tell you that the car has been off the road since July 2012 and only gets started to idle/3 point turn in the driveway once every few weeks?

Lifter sticky/not filled with oil? (No idea what I just said but it sounds like some words to use)

Yep, it certainly would. Yes

Lifters can get stuck if they are not used regularly or had time to get up to temperature etc.
Take it for a 15 minute drive and use some revs - once up to temp and see what she sounds like after that. Smile

Had this once when I started up one day, out of the blue. My oil level light wasn't flashing and it said there was oil... but obviously not quite enough, I topped it back up and after a minute the noise was gone

My lifters get noisey when its due an oil change. Sounds like a tapper for the 1 minute or so. Its always done it and always goes away. Smile

Thought I'd update this as I finally got around to changing the oil and filter today. Took the 10w-40 semi synthetic out and put my normal 5w-40 fully synthetic in. No tapping noise evident after a ~20 minute idle up to temperature (can't drive it on the road obviously) so it was indeed a hydraulic lifter.

Cheers for the suggestions/recommendation of an oil change.

One final update for this, years later. LOL

The oil change in 2014 stopped the noise for some time but eventually it did creep back in after about another year. By this time I knew it was a hydraulic lifter, not a bent valve, so didn't worry about it. My intention was to wait until I got the car back on the road again in order to put the engine under load and rev it a little more.

Two weeks ago I finally got an MOT test and put the car back on the road. The hydraulic lifter is now completely silent at all times: cold, warm, long idling etc.

Hopefully this saves someone in future from taking the head off, under similar circumstances.
