Hi guys just a quick one. Just got underneath the car to examine it prior to its MOT at the end of this month and all looks ok apart from DS wheel has very small left to right movement and PAS wheel has very slight back and forth movement.

I'm guessing if I've spotted this then so will a tester so am i right in think both wheel bearings are f**ked?

DS is barely noticeable, Pas side is a little worse but again not major.

So PAS side is ball joint? When I say back and forth movement i meant one hand at the top and one at the bottom of the wheel.

And DS wheel is the bearing? Movement occurs with hand placed at 9 and 3 o'clock?

Pretty annoying as both ball joints are relatively new. DS had a wheel bearing last year and PAS side is on the original wheel bearing iirc.

Top and bottom (12 and 6) movement is usually bearing or ball joint, you need to see if the hub is moving on the bbj or just the wheel on the hub to determine which one.

Side to side (3 and 9) is usually track rod end

Edit to add if It's a bearing you can usually feel play where ever you grab the wheel

I'm almost 100% from the symptoms. if the roads are bad nwhere you drive potholes kill balljoints and wheel bearings on the 306. from my experience

As above, wheel bearing play will be felt anywhere around the wheel.

If its just with hands at 9 and 3 its either track rod, or track rod end, tre play is usaully easy to spot.

You need someone under the car looking for the area of movement regarding balljoint or wheel bearing play.

Matt - I had this only a little ago.

The problem on the passenger side will be the hub nut needing slightly nipping up. Yes

I know they are locked with a cage and pin but they do loosen ever so slightly to cause this 12-6 play...

To get rid of it though, you will need to jack up the car, remove wheel, pin and cage then fit the spare wheel. Drop it back onto the floor. Get someone to put their foot on the brake and in 6th gear and then get a long breaker bar, preferably with a scaffold pole over the end of it and nip the nut up a tiny bit. Your play will be gone, then just put the cage, pin and cyclone back on and you're done. Thumbs up

Wouldn't that be over kill though and risk crushing the wheel bearing? I thought that had a torque setting of around 260nm??
