Anybody had oil seeping through some of their exh man studs (bottom row, 2 closest to timing)! Gradually its getting worst and after sealing the cam carriers up and finding they weren't at fault-its bloomin frustrating!!Havent done anything about it yet just thought i'd ask the question? Must be running down and looks like its comng out of the studs imo![]() Cam cover or cam seal? ![]() I know on the Evo engine the bottom row of exh manifold stud holes are not blind and they go into the oil return galleries from the head ![]() So if you don't use thread lock/seal you get leaks ![]() But don't think the XU is like this ![]() ________________________________________ Red GTB1756 powered Fabia VRS daily driver,LBSC Gti6 eater........Mac1 ZR R1 kit car build in progress. |

As far as I know all the exhaust studs on the RFS head screw into blind holes, so these are not where your leak is coming from. ![]() ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone ![]() |

Yup I've removed all the studs before and never noticed any weren't blind. More than likely either haven't managed to fully seal the rear cam cover or its leaking between the rear cam journal and the head (most likely) you only use the smallest amount of sealant when sorting that if you have to. Or it's possibly the exhaust cam seal.________________________________________ Black power baby! Agreeing with Pete here, whip the cambelt cover off and see if there is a visible mess coming from the exhaust cam seal. ![]() If not, then you either have a leak coming from between the head and the cam carrier or the cam carrier and the cam cover. Do your cam covers still have the original Peugeot gaskets fitted? ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone ![]() |

Just wip the heat sheild off and rub your finger under where cam cover meets head, you will find oil there.________________________________________ Pug fee`ver,Pick a Bogey, buy a Pug. Maybe the manifold studs have been fitted too far into the head, breaking into oilways ![]() |

I think you'd strip the ally thread from around the stud in the head well before it went through anything. Will be from cam covers or cam carriers or can seal. End of. Some smaller TU engines suffer oil leaks from failing or corroded head gaskets but yet to see this on a XU10 ________________________________________ Black power baby! That's why I asked previously if the covers still had the Peugeot gaskets on them or not.________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone ![]() |

I've had both covers off and sealed them with top quality oil resistant sealer and it has new camshaft oil seals. I added a bit of sealant to the cam covers just incase but the original sealant was in good nick.I've dried the exh manifold and all around the studs, fire car up and lie on my back beneath the engine and as it warms up I can see oil slowly making its way thru the end studs whilst being dry directly above the studs!!! It's doing this on all the bottom row studs too!! It's got me stumped as I know the threadways don't go anywhere and engine is tilting back obviously and oil doesn't run up-hill lol!! Got a rally on sat so just changed the waterpump as this failed yesterday and have it running again.... ________________________________________ d james |

Had the heat cover off top of manifold too and ran my finger across but no signs of fresh oil escaping....________________________________________ d james |

Cam seals or housing seal not quite fully sealed all round possibly ?This is why on mine iv painted it bright silver help to see where oil is coming from. Try a white rag round fingers with engine on and put finger with rag where oil could be coming from, did you check at the sides of cam housing and covers ? Iv had leaks when sealed up well, it happens. ________________________________________ Pug fee`ver,Pick a Bogey, buy a Pug. Black 306 GTI 6 Standard, was 60k mileage, bargain!! If your 100% sure its dry above the manifold it must be head gasket or cracked head![]() Anyone know if the oil return ways are located at the rear of head/block? Has the head been off? ________________________________________ Red GTB1756 powered Fabia VRS daily driver,LBSC Gti6 eater........Mac1 ZR R1 kit car build in progress. |

Cracked head is a possibility, maybe it's got a hairline crack along one of the exhaust stud threaded holes?________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone ![]() |
