I used to own a ph3 gti-6 and loved every moment of it so have decided to aquire another as a track project. And after doing track days and trips to the ring in my BMW 330ci I have decided to build a car designed for it rather than using the daily driver. From looking at different websites and talking to people i have gathered a range of ideas on engine mods, suspension and brake set up. But I was wondering if people could give me their opinion on what they think is best on a resonable budget so cant quite stretch to 1000s on brakes and suspensions. Also was wondering how much weight people expected me to lose from the 1215kg by completely stripping her.
Ive looked through the different threads at peoples projects but was wondering if there was general view on the "right" brakes or suspension to head for.
Thanks
Andy

Generally on here from opinions best practice seems to be to concentrate on handling/brakes before looking to the engine mods. Also with regards to weight I stripped my rallye, so left with 2 seats and a fibreglass bonnet and that weighed at 1040kg but hopefully around the 1000kg now

~1000kg should be achievable if you strip anything not needed and single skin some of the pannels or go for composites.

Keep an eye out for some KW V2's second hand, i've been really impressed with mine, they seem to go for around £400-500 ish second hand on here.

Brakes wise, some Carbon Lorraine RC6's in standard calipers are pretty decent for ~£200, next step up would probably be some brembo's which are usually readily available for ~£200+, theres a few threads on them.
Proper brake setups will set you back £600+

Nice and light wheels are worth the investment with some sticky rubber on them. A lot of trackdayers use Pro Race 1.2's as they are light and strong, and 7" wide if you use the 15" version.

Hope this is of some use. There are loads of track car project threads for you to go through and get inspiration. Thumbs up

p.s. Welcome to the club. Wave

Best mod is a limited slip diff for track use.

Some will suggest a plate type but even a fit and forget ATB LSD will transform cornering speed.

Yeah don't do a trackday without an oil cooler. Oil reaches 140+ degree which isn't good.

Other than that

Bigger rear ARB
Solid beam mounts
Buckets and harnesses
Brake upgrade
Diff
Good set of springs and shocks over cheapo coilies
Lighter rims ie C5's
Good set of track tyres
Shed some weight
Cage

My advice, buy someone else's completed track car. Building a half decent track car costs 4 times what the base car is worth.

Probably the best advice Yes

Unless you want it to be somehow unique to whats others have built then go for a ready made item. there is a rather tasty track rallye for sale in the cars for sale section right now Thumbs up

Totally agree. It depends if you want a project to work on though.

This ^^ Yes

You can still remove parts and sell them on to make it what you want.

Having a good roll cage built and welded in is the most costly part I think.

Buy a car, do all the things you can do to it for free (strip the interior etc) and spend the money on decent tyres and a few hours of track-driving tuition. Best bang for your buck for a beginner I reckon.
