A friend of mine has a 56 plate C220 CDi and there's an odd knocking coming from the front passenger wheel. He's been told by a garage that it's the wheel bearing, but it doesn't sound like any dying wheel bearing I've ever heard before.

There's no droning noise at all, but as you pick up speed and get up to 60mph there's an odd knocking noise that you can feel through the steering very slightly. Up to about 70mph it gets a little louder and you can feel it a little more. I'm lead to believe the wheel bearings are adjustable on these things so I'll look at that for him anyway and see if it needs doing. It's almost as if the wheel nuts haven't been tightened properly, but naturally that's been checked. The sensation through the steering isn't quite like that of an unbalanced wheel, it's not as forceful, but it's sharper, as if someone were tapping at the steering arms with a hammer as opposed to a pushing/pulling feeling of a missing wheel weight.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Smile

Has he tried the usual jacking up and spinning the wheel, then checking the wheel for movement front and back etc? I expect the garage would have done that...

the design looks an utter doddle to adjust, so I'd have a crack at that.

Would it be much the same process for a W203 chassis? I think that's what his is as a 56 plate. I'm not sure. That does look incredibly easy in that video, I like the design of that.

I do believe the 202 to 203 difference isnt great, mainly body and engines evolving.

That's what I thought, coupled with a very slight wheel imbalance that may be acceptable normally but with a worn TRE it might be making a noise, though it doesn't disappear when turning which I'd expect if it were this. I've not had a chance to get it in the air and have a look myself but I'll have a look at it when I get a chance.

yeh, I did some googling, they are indeed similar if not exactly the same, end float figures are minute, something like 0.0004"!
