Hi guys,

I'm due an oil change on my low boost SC gti6 and want a good alternative to Royal Purple thats a bit cheaper. I know that with performance engines, you shouldnt really scrimp, but I know a few of you use different oil on their SC setup with no issues.

So come on then what do you use?

unless you're having temperature issues then std oil will do fine, you are after all using standard bearings etc.

I dont see why you wouldnt use some fully synthetic though, At the end of the day its only going to cost you about 15 pound more than the total stuff. Even for piece of mind.
It does have some 80+hp more than it came with

Any oil will be fine. Depending on how long you want the engine to last with that oil, it's another matter. Yes

Royal Purple isn't only promoted because it's an extremely good quality oil with exceptionl film strength, it also heavily promotes reliability of the engine.

A decent quality 10w-40w or 10w-50w will do the trick, it's completely up to you.

I've always used 5w40 fully synthetic Morris lubricants higher spec stuf as I got it free from my old job still get my hands on it now so I've been using that charged for a year now and it's been perfect. However as it costs me nothing it gets changed every few months. Now I work for a Peugeot garage we have an abundance of purflux filters as well lol.

Royal purple is one of the best things you could treat your engine to. If you can afford it and justify the piece of mind for the expense then use it. If not, anything that isn't s**t will be fine.

Thanks guys Cheers

Stan, I see your point, but my car doesnt do many miles, and the RP is very expensive. Might give the Silkolene a try (its what I used to use before SC) and go from there. If I go high boost and have new engine etc, it will be treated to RP every time, but as said, still standard engine, so should be fine with other stuff.

Makes me laugh when people say iv had this oil for a while and all is fine, WTF its all about how it wears the engine down over a long period of time and mileage etc, not just if a bearing spins or not.

I use pro s, used for turbos and is more than enough for low boost.

This is a valid point really, many people consider that providing an engine doesn't "fail" then the oil you're using must obviously be perfectly fine.

Once you strip them down, you'll soon know if they've been treated well etc. Yes

I also see the point regarding the fact that it's still a standard engine so just use the stuff you've always normally used.

As said, complete personal choice. Yes

Id use a decent millers oil or something like that. Id be more worried about putting boost through it with a standard head gasket due to the increased cylinder temps.

I used standard head gaskets on both my low and high boost engines with no issue. Yes

Got a custom one on this engine though. Smile

This is why I use pro s, it works better at higher temps, its thin so engine moves round easier and clings to the engine better when hot like these engines do anyways.

So this stuff yeah?

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-1795-fuchs-engine-oil.aspx#Filter=[EntityIDs=@(58)@*ava=0]

(Sorry if that doesn't work, on iPhone)

Days it's ester synthetic though, what's that? Is it fully synthetic?

Also, does anyone have an opie oils discount code? I've usually got loads, but still locked out of my hotmail account Angry

Ester is a higher grade than fully synthetic.

You get what you pay for and all that.

Peugeot selected an oil with the lowest viscosity which still forces the moving surfaces apart at high temperatures and bridges gaps effectively at cold temperatures.

Total Quartz 7000 10w40 semi synthetic (standard oil) has a viscosity of 97.7 at cold and 14.8 at running temperature. The closest synthetic oil is Mobil 1 0-40 with a viscosity of 76.3 at cold and 14.3 at running temperature.

And copying an old Cosmic Spanner post ...

- much, much better than the stock oil at low temp (because it's a "0W" oil instead of a 5W or 10W) and they say 90% of an engine's wear happens at startup.

- same thickness at running temperatures as the "book" Total semi-synthetic.
- much better heat resistance & flash point at the extreme upper end (again because it's a top quality fully synthetic).

After 6 years of using Mobil 1 0-40w I would add ... the only downside is it does not cling to the engine for as long as standard between drives. So for occasional normal driving standard Oil could be better but for hard daily driving Mobil 1 is highly recommended.

For an engine which is showing signs of wear Quartz 7000 might also be better than Mobil 1 ... protection favours the oil which can bridge larger gaps and tollerances when cold. So the slightly thicker oil is better at the period when 90% of engine ear takes place.

Some Viscosity figures:

[thicker]
^^^^^^^
116.49 - Silkolene Pro S 10w50 (plenty of people use this happily, esp. on track)
101.6 - Comma Motorsport 5w50
97.7 - Total Quartz 10w40 semi (standard oil)
76.3 - Mobil1 0w40
75.7 - Castrol Edge Sport 0w40
vvvvvvv
[thinner]

Misc:

Density @15.6 ºC, g/ml (ASTM D4052) 0.85 for Mobil 1 compared to 0.87 for Quartz 7000.
Flash point 230 v 230
Viscosity Index 185 (Mobil1 1) v 160 (Quartz 7000)

Nanotechnology ...
It's won all the Tests & it's UK made so say ....
it even claims & mags have agreed to increase BHP because of the film it leaves .!!!!

Will see .?
Did somehow make the car feel quicker if that doesn't sound crazy .!!!!

Just put it in mine £60.00 online for 5litres ...a pain because I need 6 litres because of a 16 row oil cooler ...Thumbs up
£20 a litre though ...rip off .!!!!

I've found stnd oils fine as long as you change them more regular !Thumbs up

I used to run Castrol Syntron X in my race mini 20 yrs ago & it was only sold in litres & was £24 per litre then ...that's £39 now x5...Blimey .!!!!!!
That makes RP look cheap Whistle
