Hi guys, I'm a newbie having just joined after buying a track ready Phase 1 306GTi6.

I can't get the Oil Pressure guage to move more than a couple of millimeters from rest.
Turn on ignition it moves about 3mm. Starting the engine, revving it etc doesn't make it move any further.

I'm not sure what to check first, any ideas ?

All help appreciated.

Does it go up when you turn it on and then drops down again?

Have you tried replacing the sensor?

As likely as anything I'd imagine. If the gauge is going up and dropping down, it sounds like it's not getting the signal from the sensor when running to me.

Sorry, I'm getting muddled up I think. I thought the oil pressure guage was also the engine temperature gauge and only showed you the pressure briefly on start up and then returned to the start to show you the engine warming up etc. it has been a while since I owned a 6.

Ian - Phase 1's have oil pressure gauges, Phase 2 onwards had oil level and temperature gauges. Yes

On a P1 there's a dedicated oil pressure gauge in the middle of the tacho.

Pull the plug off and earth it to the block, if the gauge is working it will ping the needle to the top, if it works, then replace the sender, if it doesn't, then there's a wiring fault.

Don't forget to wait for it to finish checking the oil level once you turn the ignition on.

It shows the oil level with just the ignition on? I thought it just went to about half way on the gauge randomly (not joking). On the dipstick my car is slightly overfilled but on the 2nd click that gauge only goes about half way up until the engine starts.

Thanks! Thats really useful info. Will try that and report back.

Anyone know how much a new sender costs ?

Thanks again, Paul

Yeah it should light up above the pressure notches and the needle will go up to indicate oil level on the bit that has illuminated.

You're looking around £20 or so for a new sender if that is the issue. Yes

come on Stan you should know better than to randomly guess the price, they're on servicebox at £90 plus vat LOL

Also marked NFP so you might need to go hunting for stock somewhere at a dealer, ask a dealer to do a search on their systems, that's if you are bothered about using an used one, personally I woildnt be as they dont tend to fail very often in my experience.

Shock

£90 plus VAT...that's ridiculous, it's only a little white round sensor!

If I was you, I'd prove that was the culprit and then have a hunt down at your local scrappy. Thumbs up

trouble is they're only found on phase1 6's, s16's, and XSi's, and citroen equivalents, which are even rarer.

I have a spare oil pressure sensor and adaptor that I bought to go on the VTS engine in my 309, but didn't get round to fitting before the thing was stolen. Is there a way I can test to see if it works while off the car?

Wow, Thanks all for the input. I have to say the responses I have received have been very helpful and quick. I will test the sender tomorrow if time allows and report back. As it happens I have already been offered a 2nd hand sender but wasn't sure if that was the problem. Thanks again, Paul
