Hi all.
Ever since my parents bout a golf gt-tdi 150 about 5 years ago, its suffered with huge lag issues from the turbo. About 2 years ago the bearings were on their way out and last year, the turbo packed up. So they then paid for the repairs and once it was back on the road i took it for a test drive and still, the turbo was lagging badly. I persuaded my dad to take it back to Hi-Q and they found a leaky boost pipe. I thought this must resolve the problem but yet it is still the same.
To give you an example, if i put my foot flat on the floor at 1500rpm in second gear, the engine will slowly pick up with the turbo whistling but after 5 seconds you get the power all in one hit! It isnt too bad if you gradually accelerate but still get some lag. I dont see a great deal of smoke in the mirror as its boosting but after hooning down the motorway earlier, it did smell like burning and oil.
I can only guess at oil starvation or somthing but i literally have no idea...

If anyone can help, it would be MUCHLY appreciated! Thumbs up

Mate had his EGR event prior to his turbo failing. f**king s**tty money pits as people drive them like Miss Daisy due to trying to achieve best MPJammaG.

Is it a VNT unit? Are the vanes clogged? Does the actuator move freely? Blocked vacuum on TCV or just broken maybe?

Quite a few videos on youtube of folks cleaning the EGR out on these TDi engines if that's any help.

I took the plug off of the airbox and went out for a quick spin and there was no power at all. I dont know much about the engine or how turbos work so i best take it to diesel doctor or something. Sad

Can't always be done as the airflow metre can detect what air is being pulled through, if the egr is blanked and the car is trying to add egr gases then it will pop the engine light on and put it in limp mode anyway.

9/10 it's the airflow metre on these that play up, you can get the insert from places like gsf/euro, ideally it wants to go on diagnostic machine and view the parameters whilst driving.

Another vote for VNT, probably need unclogging at the least, or possibly replacing turbo

Coming off the rear of the EGR to filter the air before it pass through the AFM.
