Thats ok, I had a V6 306 with 120BHp for a few minutes until the guy realised he had the rollers set for the wrong number of cylinders

Lol, jesus, I can just imagine!

I have found a guy near me who might be pretty useful, seems really keen!

You never know if he is really nice I might try and get him to let me keep it there and then I can do the decent thing and get it on track fulltime!

OK time for an update

Interesting findings actually.

First, compression was fine, lowest was 196 I think and highest 206, so no issues there.

Cam timing not so fine, I think I've got this right but the exhaust was advanced far more than it should be and the inlet was slightly retarded. So this was all wrong and nowhere near where it should be, but does sort of relate to what Tom wrote on here about overlap etc.

Suffice to say it feels a lot better, runs smoother, pulls cleaner. but clearly without a repeat RR run I can't know for sure.

Can't thank Stan enough, and for those of you who have a similar issue with power not quite feeling right, check the easy stuff first. Without tell tales like oil burn or tapping try a compression check, then check cam timing, it can be out, Stan reckoned this was further out than any he had seen before, and was slightly surprised it hadn't done any damage.

So be warned guys, don't believe the tripe you read on places like this sometimes from people that maybe have picked up old wives tales. I can't imagine it was setup like this by a decent mechanic, so just be careful, another few clicks and this would have been badly damaged more than likely.

Again thanks to Stan, and all the folk who have contributed here. Been very helpful and only slightly exasperating!

Off now to write a letter to the Dartford Bridge...

Lucky you don't own a black car otherwise Stan would've stuck it on a Cross Channel Ferry. So do we have a blame/scapegoat for this work? Seems it was building up to someone but now somewhat deflated...

Glad it appears sorted.

Glad you're happy with it Rob, and the car runs a lot better. Thumbs up

Yes indeed, as stated, the timing was so far out (especially with the exhaust cam) I'm still unsure how valves weren't bent to be honest. Crazy

Anyway, it will be good once you've had a chance to get it back on the rollers and see the difference.

Nice to meet you, and good luck with the car fella. Thumbs up

Not really here for the blame game guys, it has been properly rectified now and let's hope that is the end of this problem.

At least if there is still any lack of power a few things have been nullified and counted out!

Not sure I am keen on going back to that place, but it would be best to get a good comparison!

So if the cams were in line with the holes and bars etc were fitted in these holes when cam belt was done how can the timing be out ?

Glad a compression test was done as that will show how well the engine is, sounds quite healthy but not the very best results however it does depend on the tool itself Thumbs up

Compression was: 196, 200, 200, 208.

As for the timing pins lining up, they didn't by quite some margin...

I'd be well up for attending more meets if there was the forums own equivalent to celebrity death match.

I think there should be a tug of war but with vehicles. The losers car will then get broken by pugplus and crspares and then sold for parts many months after payment

It wasnt feno22's fault. It was the poor delivery pigeon. He probably overloaded it with parts and it had a stroke mid flight.

Anyway a larger forum presence at meets is a good thing. If anything it would give the opportunity for anyone whos had they're car worked on in Leicester to return all their broken cable ties.

Car runs fine now, and to be fair the work done seems to be holding together fine.

I was amused by a group sitting near the big tree at first bend b**ching about every car that went past on a run, was proper girly rubbish!

I didn't hang around long to be honest, being a bit of a newb, you feel a bit of a hanger on thats the problem with clubs!
