Is the battery ok? seem to remember that a battery thats on its way out might cause the issues you are seeing.

The battery does go dead after a couple of weeks of not driving the car but is fine when the car is being used

Maybe the battery is at fault then

Mine still does exactly the same thing even though I've cleaned all the earths and corrosion waxed them. A battery sitting not being driven much (1000 miles in the last year), lots of cold weather and getting totally run down a few times by leaving the door/hatch open while working on it prob means the battery is getting towards the end of its useful life.

The battery in my car is now nearly 7 years old, but it's in perfect condition because when the car isn't being used it's hooked up to the optimater. Yes

I think he means what people call a battery conditioner or trickle charger. It plugs into the mains and keeps the battery charged up as long periods of inactivity kill batteries. I've got one, and I need to use it more often.

7 years is good going on a battery though!

Decent batteries should last at least that really. My 2002 Clio one was changed not long ago - was the original Renault one.

Yes, it's an optimiser which keeps the battery topped up and constantly recycled without overcharging, the charger ends up sitting in what's called 'maintenance mode'.
