I have the dash fully removed and also the heater matrix housing i also decided to totally remove!

Now is there anything that i could do whilst this is all out? ie weight saving, improvements etc.

Im gonna paint the steering rack metal plating as its a little rusted to start.

Contemplating flocking the dash but i dont think i like the look of it! Its something i would need to see in the flesh!

The firewall sound deadening has anyone removed this as to comment on if sound/ heat is increased beyond being a good idea.

I know it would need cutting as part of the top is used to rest dash on when refitting to stop vibrations etc.

Anyone used a different way of heating car or screen doing away with all the matrix housing etc?

Any ideas/pictures etc would be great

It definitely gets much hotter in my car with the combination of no firewall deadening or carpets, something I'd only recommend on a dedicated track car with plenty of cooling, the whole car also feels a lot more rattly and uncomfortable.

The only other way of heating the screen is by replacing it with an electrically heated one, few hundred quid and I've heard mixed results about them.

What do you use the car for?

I would put it all back in, you dont lose that much weight but gain a massive pita and a lighter wallet.

My 6 is fully stripped apart from the sound deadening behind the dash. Not to sure if I should remove it or not. I've been reliably informed it weighs 16kg's by someone on here who removed it but not sure how much extra noise and vibrations there will be. Got plenty of thick stick on foam at work I could put on the back of the dash to stop it rattling maybe?
Heater matrix is weeping so dash will be out over the summer.

It does weigh a fare bit as removed from the xsi when i ripped it apart.

I was thinking of maybe replacing with something.else a bit lighter.

Think dash only really sits on top part by windscreen

If you're thinking of replacing it with something else I honestly wouldn't bother, you'd only remove it if you're really bothered about weight saving, if you want sound proofing still you won't get much lighter or better. Anything you replace it with will be heavy or crap, either way you might as well just leave the original stuff in.

Well i managed to pull the bung out before i had the idea of using plyers to break the ends to remove but luckily i got the matrix bung back in without to much hassle!

Put bx with matrix back in, doing a little repair as the lower drainage tube that goes into grommet to take water out on the passengers side was broke but just enough i can fit a small piece of hose and then use a some building/gasket sealant. Will paint hose black lol and fitted another bung as the angled bit had been ripped off so no much use really but all sorted now.

Just got to start putting it back together but going to do slow over the week as busy going here and there. Need to paint the rack surround aswell to tidy it up.

Not gonna bother weight saving the front , no point having a think about it.

Seriously thinking of modifying the dash now!

Driving the car is so much more responsive without the weight up front!

In my mind it makes driving the car more fun and having the V6 grunt and no dash makes for a nippy and sporty drive.

Im so thinking of something new to do. Gonna look at the dash and maybe play about with it a little.

There near on 1k aint they lol

Been out today on a few techinical roads, roundabouts that require a quick flick etc and although more responsive its more gittery and i have to over work the car back where as before it would stick and glide nicely but the front stripped although nimble its just that little bit to light.

It's in your mind, taking the dash out and removing maybe 15 kilos of weight isn't going to change the handling of your car to any noticeable degree LOL

The car and i become one when i drive.

Believe me i do the same bit of road every weekend, and round about and it reacted differently today.

Weather pretty much the same and unless there is somethong a little off somewhere it was definatly different with the dash and air flow boxes out!

Anyways im just gonna stick it back in, to much i keep thinking of doing.

Cure rusted the steering rack, doing door looms and repaired a few bits broke on air box mainly the plastic tube to vent whatever out on the bottom.of box and out through the bung which ive also replaced as there was no external directional hose as was cut off by previous and a cable threaded through it lol
Getting there slowly but surely
