Just Google it in your area, enough reviews etc can generally be found to make an informed decision.

There's a good guy through my way, reasonably priced and does a great job. I wouldn't take anything to him that needs done in a hurry right enough as it can take him a bit of time to get the job done.

Bit of a hike for you though.

How long do you want the parts to last before rust starts ?

If you dont care then powder coating is for you.

How long does Zinc plating usually last before it starts to rust/oxidise or whatever? Wasn't there a lad on here who zinc plated nearly everything in the engine bay?!

I think that would have been Matts Astor 306 you are thinking of, it's the best restoration of a 306 I have seen and gutted I didn't have the money at the time to buy it. If anything it was too nice, it needed looking after, not hammering like mine does. Here's the thread

Zinc plating wont last long at all, especially on items that get a lot of heat, stones, fast salt rain wind hitting it etc, electroless nickel plating is the best at stopping the corrosion but is more expensive to have done, however it is a good looking finish.

Depends very much on the quality of the work done and how well they prep the metal before plating it. Any monkey can make chrome plating look good on day one, it's how it looks after a few months that tells the difference between a cheap job and a decent one.

Basically, don't go for the cheapest option if you want it to look good.

And last, if like me you are putting money into it you might as well spend a little more knowing it will last a very long time.

Chrome is good but nickel is far superior at stopping the corrosion and its also chemical proof too, so good for use with brake parts etc. Also chrome is a little bit too shiny for me, nickel has a brass type colouring which looks really nice.

Powder coating is always better when its had a powder primer coating before the powder top coat. When only having the one layer on and any damage on it then water can get in and eventually rust creeps under the coating etc, even if the part was zinc plated do to water being trapped in.

Quality is the main key to powder coating not lasting, one layer doesnt help much.

Why not have it zinc plated and then powder coated? It would cost more but in the long run last much longer and look better. I work in a galvanizing plant and we dip an awful lot of structural steel that goes on to powder coating. Protects the galv and looks good

Does the powder stick to the zinc okay? I'd have thought it'd need something coarser to get a good coating.

The coating sticks as well as to well prepped non galvd steel
When prepping work for PCing after galv its sanded down to a much smoother finish than if its being left galv'd.
With most PCing its shot/sand blasted before but this obv doesn't need doing if its galv'd so they spray it with a chemical etch to get a good bonding surface then continue with normal PCing method Smile

Or just galvanise it instead of bzp'ing then powdercoat it. Lots cheaper than BZP and paint sticks to it.
