After changing the tappets my engine ran.much quieter. But after a while it became.noisy again and won't.seem.to idle.

When you build the revs up and let off it won't stop at idle it just goes down and cuts out.

Any ideas on what this could be?

Idle control valve / stepper motor
Mine does this occ, esp when very cold
Other threads about idle mention map, tps & lamba
How many times has it happened?

I does it every time it has been started. Makes it impossible to drive.

Ice has been cleaned. I've had my mates diagnostics on it and there are no fault codes. Surly if it was a sensor it would show?

Changed the stepper on mine recently which has solved the problem for me so far. When i was looking for solutions the power steering sensor was mentioned as a possible cause also if I remember.

Just seemed odd it only happened since the tappers were changed. It's never happened before.

My first impression saysits the idle control valve because starts.and idles but when u add revs and when it goes down it didn't stop at idle.

But surely it would have brought up a fault code.

it causes the engine to rev when used so I can see it causing an issue.

PAS sensor has contributed to loads of idle issues on these cars. Yes

Simply unplug it and see what happens. Thumbs up

Thick cream in the oil cap?

Definitely sounds like the HG on if's way out. Try this:

Run the car up to temp and then switch it off. The next morning go outside, pop the bonnet and remove the rad cap. There should be zero sound. If you hear a 'hiss' or there is loads of pressure there then the HG is almost certainly going/gone. Yes

its not head gasket. Had a sniffer test done and its all fine.

The cream in the cap i asumme then is due to condensation front sitting there for so long being started and stopped over the winter.

The dodgy idle is still there, ive unplugged all the sensors and the only one which dosnt affect it is the ivc, would that indicate that is the problem?

Yup sounds like it. I had a sh*t idle and did the whole cleaning thing but it just came back a couple weeks later. Best of replacing it.
