Well iv changed the ECU temp sensor, new ICV, Checked any air leaks, fitted known working coils and my engine still wont rev up smoothly.

I turn the throttle fast and it wont rev up with it, it only does when i rev up slowly. I had a back fire earlier but that seems to have gone now as has the holding on1.5 k revs and it went up then down in revs by its own accord. All this went after fitting another coil set.

Engine is from the VTS and had done 39k before fitting, so im sure all sensors would still be working fine. I dont have one of those electrical testing gismos, cant afford one either.

Iv researched a lot but i am now a bit lost in finding the problem, the exhaust isnt fully fitted tightly but is in one peice. Car is off the road having beam parts fitted so cant drive it yet.

Any ideas?

Oh and forgot to mention iv unplugged the lambda sensor which seemed to have made the engine cut out at idle after a few minutes of starting which is sorted now.

It idles perfectly too, it just about cuts out when in high revs then let go of them.

Oh and ill give the MAP sensor a little clean just in case its playing up a bit and will update thread once sorted in a bit.

Have you got the fuel feed and return pipes on the right way round?

Yep i double checked them when fitted, iv given map sensor a quick clean and found some paint flakes it seemed inside yet still the same. It revs up to 4-5 rpm fine no problems, only when turning throttle slowly as when i turn it fast it struggles, blurps then goes up eventually ??

I bought the right spark plugs ages ago so im sure they are not causing any problems. Spark plugs were dark and sooty when checked too, not wet ie head gasket.

I check fuel pipes again.

Had to quote my post so i can browse pictures to add one quickly.

Top pipe is feed which is bigger as standard. There is fuel pressure there too.

Checked again and fuel pipes are in order, its easy as feed is new with a rubber protection around it and return is standrd copper that was used for feed with old engine. Pressure is all to the fuel rail too, i can feel fuel running inside when fuel pump primes.

Have you got the correct injectors for a 6 in that engine ? Xsara use different type ?

Using the same injectors that came with the engine, no engine parts were changed before i bought it im 99% certain, there was no reason for previous owner to do so as he bought it at 39k but changed his mind fitting it in his car and bought a golf.

Iv found out mine isnt the multiplex engine loom so will have the same injectors as the 6, as are the MAP sensors which is one i havent changed, that is next on the list, wish me some luck as ineed some after all the other problems iv had with car and engine lol.

My vts engine came from a 99 model car which i forgot to mention.

Lambda loom ok? I had the same problems you've described and it was discovered that the loom wires on the plug end were all exposed and touching causing the lambda to work intermittently. It's unplugged now and runs perfect apart from obviously slightly rich.

Just trying to find a loom now as pug will only sell me the whole engine loom, F that!

No, you dug up a three year old thread from a noob, in which noob was also corrected to the fact that this management system has no MAF sensor.

I was talking to a mate via txt that has worked on these engines a hell of a lot and he called it the maf sensor so i searched as i knew it was called a map sensor. I suggest you get your facts right before you speak basically saying im lying when i am not thankyou very much!!

This is from a pitcrew menber too, i was just trying to suss out why he said its not map but maf thinking they are the same sort of thing, thankyou.

Anyway back on topic.

Iv fitted a known working MAP sensor and today its re-started the poping sound from the cylinders, it could be a back fire but its a poping sound for sure. Iv rest ecu twice now.

It now seems to go below 1k then up and down then after a minutenits back to 800ish then stays there. I felt one poping sound vibrating on the throttle on onlet just now too. If i rev it high then let it down a bit then rev it back up it goes up and down fine its when it settles on idle then rev up quickly it pops n splutters then takes time to rev up.

Its baffled me now!

Yep lambda plug area looks fine. Its unplugged now anyways.

Are the cam & crank sensors in good condition? Also is the lambda sensor new? They often don't just straight up fail as some parts do and can become intermittent, causing all sorts of weird problems.

You mentioned that the loom isn't the Xsara multiplex jobby, but did the engine come from a phase 2 Xsara and originally had a multiplex loom? I ran into a few troubles matching up some of the sensors when fitting a GTi6 loom to a P2 Xsara engine. All the sensors have to match the loom, basically. I tried adapting my GTi6 loom to use the rounded MAP sensor plug from the multiplex loom as I didn't have a square MAP sensor, but it didn't work and I had to replace the square plug and find a square sensor. The knock sensors are different as well, but I don't recall how exactly but I had similar trouble with that.

Nope Miles did the loom that came with engine and said its not the mulitiplex type, the VTS was a T reg BTW. The MAP sensor etc is the same type as my 98 306 gti6 which is ph 2. Iv put a new crank sensor in, cheap new ebay ICV, new pug ECU temp sensor, which when i unplug it still has the same symptoms???

Im about to have a look see at the lower TB sensors ie TPS etc and see.

Oh and cam sensor i think is ok, cant test it as i dont have one of those testers and tbh never used one, they seem a bit complicated to work out. Ill use my known working gti6 one just in case but i dont think that is the problem. Lambda was not new but unplugged it now as it seemed to make engine cut out on its own accord after a few minutes.

That's looking a little worse for wear. Does the engine just cut out if you unplug it while idling? It should do straight away - this is how I found out the one on my 309 wasn't actually doing anything because it made no difference.

With old MAP sensor i did unplug it and engine just reved up and down quute a bit but didnt cut out although i never left it like that for too long.

I'll use some carb cleaner around it inside it and wires as they do look oily.

I just unplugged it and revs went up down a few times then it cut out this time.

Think it might be worth replacing that plug in that case, or buying a new MAP sensor, or at least trying you've seen working on another engine yourself. It ought to just cut out straight away. There's also the chance it may have caused damage to the ECU if it's shorted at that plug, though I'm not very electrically minded so someone else should be able to say how likely that is.
