Well, with doing more and more miles for work I decided to get an oil burner Smile
Wasn't In any rush to get one, but as with most things if one comes at the right price you take it.

So I'm now the proud new owner of a rusty yellow.... Erm blaze yellow 1998 phase 2 Dturbo, not quite up to rallye speed but the ride to work this morning was very comfortable and a lot less frantic

It's been well looked after cambelt and clutch and a few other bigger jobs done in the last couple of years
What I have noticed from the history is its evens to like wishbones (I've heard that off somebody else as well)

So who's had one/got one?
What's the main issues with them?
What sort of mpg can I expect?
Any cheeky little performance mods?? Thumbs up

No real issues as such.
Our 406 has been very good over the last 3.5 years. Has had the fuelling sorted but no extra boost and drives much better for it. Main thing is the mpg isn't great - we get about 40 with a bosch pump, but it does weigh 200kg more. Bin the cat and EGR if it has them.

What you can do depends on the fuel pump and turbo you have fitted. And how much smoke you want to create.

You may well also be able to run on veg oil - we haven't as we wanted a long term reliable car, but a friend has been with no probs at all.

Similar to above,I use to run mine on 10w40 oil in the summer, biodiesel & a bit of old oil after oil changes :-) use to smoke a little on boost but what 16 year old diesel doesn't.Ended up fitting Gti6 interior, bumpers and cyclones onto my ph2 blaze to smarten the old girl up a little

Wishbones depends on suppliers and how well u avoid potholes....
Ill chat to you on thurs about tweaks Wink is it a Lucas or a Bosch(tophat) pump the latter will love veg oil the former hates it and shears shafts
I used to get 75mpg Cool out of my ph1dturbo with a fuel tweak and no turbo mods (used to like triple figures on the private road too Ninja as no charge temp issues Cool also gotta be the easiest filter changes/service pug made compared to the 6's

Another fool who supposedly buys a diesel for the economy aspect, then instantly wants it to be a 'performance enhanced' version.

Diesel is more expensive too, so ever dwindling reasons for swapping.

Do one daz Razz some of us don't sit on our arses doing f**k all at home all day Wink

And it's an easy choice really, 300-350 miles to £70 in the rallye or 400-450 in the Dturbo for about £5 more? Makes no sense does it?
And as a lot of people say a few small performance tweeks can up the economy as well

Diesel may be 10p? a litre more, but as long as you can get twice the mileage for less than twice the price you know you're on to a good thing.

Only disadvantage with a HDi IMO is the constant whiplash from the boost, but that's a minor issue.

even at 10p a ltr more it's £6 max per tank, and if i fill up twice a month compared to 5 times a month i'm definitely saving money. 406 v6: 0, 306 hdi: 1

the boost thing is definitely a problem. the sheer G's i pull makes me blackout occasionally

I was going to fit VTS bars to mine but I believe if I enter corners any quicker it will end in tears. I am on the limits of grip as is.

Diesel boost is definitely more powerful that petrol boost. My DCi can destroy Pagani Huayras if I built the boost up and dump the clutch but I get whiplash from the acceleration and armache from gripping the wheel too hard so don't do it often

yes i forget about the armache in my HDI, it is terrible wrestling the wheel when it torque steers. it's like driving ten Focus RS's all at the same time

Except common rail can already do that albeit we rarely see it. Clio Dci get 80mpg plus at 65-70mph

Haha it was something special anyway, wastegate arm wouldnt adjust so played with pump and kept up withy cousins stage 1 Big grin
Managed Southampton docks to home on 15l with fuel to spare LOL (skint off honeymoon)

Used to hit 125 regularly wen speed checking at local airstrip

I would recomend lasers with 55 profiles as I found these to carry better mpg cos of rolling momentum I presume (although they were ditchfinders Dunno )

He says he has a Bosch pump, so the answer is, yes you can. Yes

Don't try it on a mechanical diesel with a Lucas pump, the thickness of the veg oil tends to seize the pump and snap the main shaft. Doh
