Hi,

I'm having some troubles selecting 1st/2nd gears, had a look at some previous threads and think the problem lies with the linkages.

Had a look on Ebay, looking at approx. £40 for news ones. Pug1Off do a set for £38 or £55 with a short shift.

Anyone tried the Pug1Off ones?

Read quite a few contrasting reviews of quick shifts generally, would it be worth the extra £17?

The quickshift pug1off do in that picture looks a lot like the GE quickshift of old, though I can't see quite how it clamps down tight onto the gearbox arm so that might be a worry if it's able to slip. Miles' from here (pugracing on eBay, probably the £40 odd ones you've seen) makes gear rods which are quite highly rated by a number of people on this and other forums - I've used sets on both the 205 and 309 I used to own and no doubt it's only a matter of time before I buy some for my '6.

Metal gear rods do tighten up the gear selection nicely Thumbs up

I've got a Compbrake quickshift in mine,its a replacement gearstick which is adjustable,very good IMO Wink

Have you tried changing your gearbox oil?

Gets over looked on alot of older cars,and having the correct grade in the 6 speed box makes a difference Yes

I can do that type for next to nothing, but using threaded bar isn't the strongest method at all so I would hate to supply it for it to snap, If your after a set drop me a PM and I can sort that out, Also the Q/S I'm making similar to what Skip Brown do or did but it does involve supplying a new 'L' but again with a new ball this will help tighten everything up nicely

Thanks a lot for the help and info guys. Dropped GE an email and they got back to me straight away saying they had a quick shift I could buy. Very keen on those linkages Miles so I'll drop you a PM!

Changed the gearbox oil a couple of days ago when I put the car back together, used the Pug stuff as recommended on here. Thanks for the idea though.

Uprated gear linkages make a nice difference!
I have previously fitted a GE type quickshift to the end of my the long gear selector rod, made gearchange notchy and quite clunky and it was a right pain to adjust so i'm staying well clear of those ones from now on.
How about a gear lever one like compbrake and others do? I have one my 106 and it's fully height adjustable and it's very OE looking under the leather gaitor.

The compbrake does look quite smart, gonna give the GE and new rods a go though. Just out of interest, how does the compbrake allow you to select reverse without the lifter? Or is the 6 version different? Thanks again.

Prob the best idea would be to buy a new lift up mech bracket from Pug Yes

I cut the old one off my old stick and fitted it to the compbrake stick using a hoseclip to retain it.

The other pain with the Compbrake one is you need to drop downpipe off to remove/fit gearstick Smile

Oh yeah and another pain is the collars keep coming loose Thumbs down

so you need to get them welded to stick once you have got the shift where you like it Thumbs up

Just to add now that the Shorter 2 rods are now adjustable on the car, no more taking them off which can be a pain when new, So the rods have left & right hand threads which is a first so I'm waiting for everyone else to copy me now

Is that the type you've just sent me from eBay miles? Adjustment on the car? Does that make a quick shift obsolete then as I already have one on the car.

I was also looking at getting the pug1off gear linkages so I'm glad this thread came up. Seen as miles item is highly rated ill be ordering a set on Thursday. Are they easy enough to fit as this is one of the jobs I've never done before?

Old ones can be a bas**rd to get off at times not sure about the miles ones don't think their to bad just have extra clips to hold them on. Think he said they come with instructions.

Q/S's are a personal thing, I hate them as it makes the box bulk, a good std linkage set up is all thats needed I think and to go along with this I don;t have any on any of my car's, 205's or 306's.

But I will be producing a adjustable Q/S which is fixed onto a brand new Quadrant 'L' so it won;t be that cheap but you will have a new ball as well which again helps keep it good

Miles I received my linkages today but no instructions.... Do you fit the secondary clip after their in place or leave them on? Also what's the best grease to use in them? Normal ML?

Take the pin/clip out completely, pop the ball on, push the pin through then clip it around. You won't even be able to get it on with the pin through in the first place, unless the design has changed since the last set I bought from him.

Gearstick base, thats made of alloy with a spherical bearing in it, and two collars which you fit to your standard gearstick once the standard plastic ball has been removed from it. Thumbs up

Only downside to it is that the collars need welding to the gearstick to stop them coming loose Roll eyes

they come supplied with grub screws in them, but even if you countersink the gearstick and use thread lock on the grub screws they still come loose Thumbs down

The pivot point is raised on the compbrake set up compared to the standard gearstick base, so thats how it gives you your shorter shift Wink

Personally I'd give the g.e p1o one a wide birth, mine couldn't hack the pace at trackdays Ali is too soft also once I had a d/s seal go the oil made it slip hence the tack
