as title ive got a gti 6 track car and the synchro is getting weak on second gear, i had a 205 gti 1.9 with the 1.6 box a while back and it flew due to the lower ratio's. Was wondering if the same can be done with the gti 6 easily and if its worthwhile or not. Any advice appreciated, cheers

main problem is the Ns drive shaft cup and clutch linkage. Xsara vts is the way to go for 5 speed

The box fits but I'm not sure the shaft will ? Also you need to change the clutch and flywheel I believe ?

Put the 306 diff in it - no shaft problems then.

ok thanks for the replys, are the ratios lower/different in the xsara box to the gti 6? like i said would be great to get some more acceleration out of it if a lower ratio box is a straightforward swap

Not sure what the ratios are but I imagine 1-5 of the GTi-6 box are similar to the 205 1.6 box.

yup, you're in the right ballpark there with that comment, but 4-5-6 are closer.

gear speeds @ 7200 rpm on a 4.05 FD for the gti6 box.

    41 64 85 104 126 150

    gear speeds @ 7200 rpm on 1.6 box (4.06 FD, 3.3 of 2.92 1st)

    36/41 64 88 112 138

    all on 195 50 15.

i ran a 1.6 gti box on a gti6 engine and that those gears were really close, possibly a bit too close

the xsara box would be the way forward

i still have a 1.6 gti box(be1) in my shed that i kept for spares

The thing is i dont mind them quite close as its only going to need to top out at say 120mph really as its a track only car, no point having a box with gearing for say 160mph as your just wasting acceleration. Dosent look to me as though the ratios on paper are that much different 1-5 between the two though? Would the xsara box give me better acceleration? Not really heard of doing that conversion as you'd expect the ratios to be longer with it only being 5 speed

funny quote, given 1-3 are nigh on identical, and 4-5-6 are closer together LOL

    MI16/zx16v ratios @7200 on 195 50 15.

    38 59 86 113 144

    vts ratios

    38 59 86 115 148
