Went to kick over the '6 this morning, all lights working fine on the dash etc, but when I went to turn the key, it did not want to turn over. You could hear the engine trying to turn over very slowly, and gradually got slower, just as if the battery had completely died.

Anyway, I turned it off and tried starting her again just to make sure, and it wouldn't start, but the rev counter needle went up to about 6,000 revs and stayed there, when I turned the key off, the needle came back down but it wasn't smooth, it was jumpy.

Tried starting her one last time whilst pumping the accelerator pedal and she burst into life, then died again. So I did the same again, and when she started, blipped the throttle a few times and then she settled into her normal idle.

Obviously I had been driving her around during the day, turning off when parked up etc. Sometimes she would start up again absolutely fine as normal. Other times she would do the exact same again, just not turn over for a while like the battery is completely dead. Eventually, she would start again with a few pumps of the accelerator.

What I have also noticed, is that when she did start again, the CD player had reset itself (i.e. no radio stations saved and all setting for bass/treble etc were lost)... strange.

Anybody any ideas what this might be? Somebody has suggested it might be starter motor?

Bit worried about driving her at the moment and being stranded because she won't start!

Cheers guys Smile

Crap battery connections is my guess to start with.

Exactly this, either corroded terminals or loose terminals. Yes

Whip them off and clean them up, then refit and make sure they are tight. Whilst you're at it, check and clean the engine bays earth points too. Yes

This 99% will solve the problem. Thumbs up

You'll need to throw money at the car. Not on parts. Just stand near your car and throw loose change at it, I find this increases performance for a short period of time

True Rich, I seem to spend less and less time on here! I even said to you that I had better post something up to say I'd sorted it as everyone was good enough to offer suggestions, but still forgot!

Anyhow as Rich said I got a replacement battery and it has been fine since, guess my one had a dead cell or something as it was losing all of its charge overnight without any use of the car.

Cheers for the help though guys.
