Hey chaps,

Just wanting some opinions of people in the know.

Can people tell me the pros and cons from each engine, i want to hear from people who have owned/experienced them. Either/both please Smile

Obviously the 1.4 is better for a number of reasons, being tax bracket, MPG, insurance. But is the 2.0 being overlooked?

Toying with the idea of getting a car in the new year with as little outlay and upkeep as possible but whilst also getting the most for my money MPG/servicing/repairs/parts wise?

How do they compare MPG wise? Im told there wont be much in it between the two on a long run but the 2.0 would respond better with a remap? Need to also consider whats better to live with on a day to day basis

Also need to bare in mind initial outlay for the car too, when looking at the 206's it seems they start very cheap indeed in the 2.0 bracket as opposed to the 1.4 bracket.

Dont see many 1.4hdis for sale with over 120K whereas alot of 2.0hdis have alot more than that.

Engines not good for the long term on a 1.4?

1.4 is a fair bit newer, which is a factor in why you don't see so many with higher mileages, as well as them being used as town cars.

206's rust, smaller engines use chocolate teapot gearboxes, have crap beams.

206 1.4hdi is upto 80mpg apparantly which is pretty insane economy. I know the 2.0hdi isnt far behind but all the other things come into play like insurance/tax band etc

Its all very well people saying Xsara ftw but dont back it up with any info on why.

As far as i can see they are worse mpg, worse tax, worse insurance, and look hideously ugly! Even more ugly than your junk pile Nile Thumbs up Smile

Not a single thing i can think of that makes it better really other than the fact the 2.0 is the more robust/reliable engine of the two

Xasara = 110, cheaper, bigger boot, same economy, same tax, faster, this is comparing to a 306 btw.

as I said, 206 beams are crud, 206's rust, also use s**te gearbox.

I have a 306 hdi for my work pig and can't fault it returned nearly 800 miles to a full tank last fill up Thumbs up

I've had a Vreg 2000 1.4i Citroen Xsara, not so ugly compared to the newer ones and was lovely to drive. Same engines and chassis as a 306 but a bigger boot.

I'd consider getting one of these, the 206's are not so reliable or robust.

Oh and another car i'd consider would be a Citroen Xantia HDi Smile

I know its not the same car but ive just bought a 406 estate 2.0 110 hdi as a workhorse (only £300! Lol) it has 200k on the clock and the engine is sweet as a nut, quiet as the day it was made, pulls very well and no smoke! Great engines.

The money you save buying a 1.4 will be out laid on repairs.

Sound advice from v6saloon.

406 2.0 hdi
307 2.0 hdi
306 2.0 hdi

All can be had for not very much.

I've got a 307 2.0 hdi for sake at £1395 if interested.

Good motors them, my old man use to have the activa. They suffer with hydrolic problems when they get tired though Sad

We had the Sx (one with the Spoiler) looked nice, quick and damn good engines. Smile

The Hydraulic system will last with good maintenance though Wink

another vote for the xsara, i think the 2.0 hdi 206 has a BE gearbox but not sure on the 1.4, but anyhow avoid the MA gearbox. 206 main faults as said are the beams and troublsome BSI units.

Only really asking about the 1.4's as my brother is hell bent on getting one in the new year and binning his golf GTi's to save money. Wanted to gather opinions on both engines really to weigh up pros and cons.

Also keeping an eye out for the right 3dr 306 HDi to turn up also as it maybe something i will look at getting. Not in any rush there though, as i dont want to spend too much...so if it turns up it turns up!

Just got some PE2's on some clones ready to go on the 6 but its p**sed it down with rain for 24hours here so not had a chance to try them out yet!

Have heard that the 1.4 does have the MA gearboxes which are a weak point. Apparantly the 1.4s have intercoolers though which the 2.0 doesnt which is a plus point with regards to possible remapping.

If i generally look towards getting the most bang for buck (ie. the most mpg/use for as little outlay as possible) then the 1.4hdi would win

You certainly need a diesel the amount of miles you do.

As far as out lay is concerned although you will be seeing far better mpg you need to remember thy even the 206 is an ol motor now and the engines may be strong but it's the bits around them that fail. You'd probably be better off with something 3-5 years old that wont need any attention at all.

^Very true Matt but my budget is pretty tiny so no hope of that happening anytime soon!

Dont really like new cars anyway, not unless they are the top of the range models of that type normally!

Will let you know how those PE2's are 2mora, when i get them on. Going to take her for an extended 'test drive' LOL Superman
