I was driving the T5 along an A road last night doing about 50 - 60 mph and some old guy pulls straight out in front of me from a Junction on the right. Obviously because he came from the right, I had nowhere to go so I slammed on the brakes and kept it on tarmac until I ran out of space and swung the car left to avoid him. Just luckily there happened to be a stretch of open grasslands right next to me with no Bank so I had a safe run off and stopped safely. I don't even think the guy knew what had happened, it must have been his passengers who told him as he almost carried on driving.

He was genuinely very apologetic and as I don't get shaken up very easily I didn't make a big deal of it, took his details in case the car has any damage and off I went. If anything, I hope this thread will make some of you realise that even on a quiet, empty or deserted road at night, anything can happen and if I had been going over the limit then the situation would more than likely have been fatal for someone.

Oh, and Volvo's have awesome brakes on the T5's, how that never spun on the grass I don't know.

Yeah it was, a mixture of luck and driving experience. Glad the family wasn't in there.

He could have been done for careless driving had you crashed.

I've had similar where a girl pulled out across my path on a 60mph country road (with excellent visibility as it happens). Brown trousers doesn't describe how much i was s**tting it as I was metres from T boning them with my foot buried in the carpet. Girl driver and passenger both thought it was funny, i'm sure they would have struggled to laugh again had I not been so hot on the brakes. Crazy

Glad your both ok. You see careless drivers everyday and i dont think some people realise it can take 2 seconds to crash at speed and die.

Thanks guys, Craig you're absolutely right, a lot of older drivers I find can't keep up with the fast pace of driving we have these days. The guy last night said he didn't see me which was surprising ad it was pitch black and I have xenons.

All the time I would imagine. It's scary to think how much trust we have to give to drivers of other vehicles to do the right thing. One slight mistake or lack of concentration from either party can result in a catastrophe.

To be more graphic, one cock up or lack of concentration from either party can result in some poor kid not having mummy or daddy come home again. That's how I think when driving.

I had a similar thing happen in my old xr2i. A guy pulled out on me, from he left, and I hit his rear quarter, spinning him round about 90 degrees into he middle of the road. He planted his foot down and drove off! Idiot. Best thing was there was hardly a mark on my car, where as I can imagine his rear quarter must have been f**ked. Yes

It was one of the old xr2is with the big plastic bumpers. I caught him right on the corner of my bumper. I honesty thought my car would be wrecked, but it had just slightly damaged the plastic. Result!!. LOL

On rare occasions if it's Friday the 13th and the moon is in alignment with Venus... and also the accident happens in a specific way, these old bangers are pretty tough. I had an elderly woman change lane in her Honda Jazz right into the driver's door of my 205. Her Jazz had a cracked headlamp & bumper, the dent in my door pushed out and was more or less completely straight afterwards. Even the plastic trim came out with hardly a scuff.

She even tried to claim off my insurance after admitting fault at the scene and accepting my offer of a few quid to buy a replacement door from a scrappy that I'd fit myself. Insurance came down in my favour (obviously) but I didn't chase them up for any payout after pushing the dent out.

Yes
A Go-Pro and a willing no win, no fee ambulance chaser company FTW next time I'm knocked off.

I'll bet people are a lot more sorry when their money is under attack from the cyclist in a wheelchair.

You've got directional abs linked to the dynamic esp system, its amazing what it can do. You can use it to turn in to a corner or it can get you back from virtually any angle. Wet trackdays show it very well. Main problem is that it can't be turned off and murders rear brake pads. Really only an issue on track though.
