Right. I have not used the car for 2 weeks but had a friend start it every 3 days. One day she tried to start it and the battery was dead so she jump started it. I picked the car up today and it was slow to start but fired and and was fine. I thought I'd drive it for an hour to charge the battery and when I flashed a car the power seemed to drain, the car misfired and then it settled. I thought maybe it needed a longer charge. So carried on driving it. Then I used the full beam and the car misfired very badly, all the lights on the dash went mad as did the outside lights. Then the headlights died. So I got it home. The engine was running okay but still no headlights.

I have changed the bulbs, checked all the fuses under the steering wheel and under the bonnet. All seem okay.
When checking fuses I noticed that the battery terminals were loose. Now I guess the connection got to a stage of intermittency and it has f**ked something. I also tried an ecu reset.

Any ideas? I seem to be thinking it's a blown ecu or something.

doubt it's blown ecu atall

I'd be more tempted to check the battery cos it might have had it. just jumping and/or taking it back out doesn't mean it's now fully recharged. it might be fubar and its losing voltage

I did think that but it seems to be holding a charge, the full beam fires up still so I'd have thought it would have the juice for main beam. Could a knackered battery just stop the front fogs and main beam? All the other stuff like the a/c, heated window and blowers all work at the same time. Dunno

id take it off,fully charge it,test voltage then.
batterys can do funny things when knackeredUnsure

No not if it runs and drives. Had battery's mess about causing all sorts of faults before but not an individual fault not possible. Sounds like a poor connection which may have popped a fuse or relay or burned out a wire.
My mk1 dturbo years ago suddenly lost its live to the dipped beam for no reason out the blue. The wire lost continuity ap just bridged it from the back of the fuse box

It does sound like your loom has developed a fault, or maybe a dodgy earth...... Do you possess a multi meter?

An auto electrician Dunno

I had an intermittent electrical fault on a 309 GTI years ago, I took it to An auto electrician & he couldn't find any faults, as I drove it away it did it again so I took it straight back, four guys dived on it with meters & 2 mins later they found a live wire behind the radio that was moving around & shorting which was causing all my problems, a £40 well spent me thinks.

Your problem does sound to be battery/alternator so let a professional look at it as you could save a fortune....

A bit unrelated but my mum's mondeo started doing this and turned out to be a coilpack or ford equivalent. Maybe try unplug them one by one? Dunno

Random. I will be taking it to my usual garage today. If they can't find it I will have to take it to an auto electrician as I'm useless with multi meters. Sad

If it was me, I would check all fuses, both in the cabin and under the bonnet and then I would inspect as much loom as you can see for visual damage.

Furthering on from this I would test the battery voltage and do a "drop test" on it to see what voltage it drops to to ensure the battery is working correctly.

I suspect you have a mixture of worn out battery alongside a damaged loom wire or earth, which has had a bad connection, arced and now burnt out. Yes

I'd definitely clean up the earths before you do anything else, then search the wiring loom. Where it's been sitting around, corrosion is possible.

Checked the fuses again but that's it. I know next to nothing about electrics so wouldn't know where to start. I am poppingIt in to my local garage for a little look today if they have time free. If they find no problem I will need to call an auto sparky I reckon. Problem is see, without the car working I can't easily get to work so whatever it costs I gotta stump up. Sad
