Okay, so I love 306's and I'll be keeping the Rallye as a daily but I'm after something else for the weekends.

Due to my wrist now being f*cked, I can't risk riding bikes on the road the way I used to and I'll be getting an R6 for the track.

This leaves me wanting a fun weekend/track car.

I've thought of a 2.1 throttle bodied GTi-6 or an E36 M3 Evo in Estoril blue and only in estoril blue.


I know it's a crap comparison, but I love them both.

I did look for a 205 T16 but that's about £50k out of my budget haha

Personally I would go for the M3. They're supposed to be awesome drivers cars.

Stan, I'd rather do the ITB conversion myself and lose the cash that way. I'm unconvinced about the SC '6's, I'm not a fan of forced induction, but have always said, if I was to go SC or turbo, I'd always go SC.

thing is the e46 is a much better buy.
They have fewers problems with rust and spliting shells at the rear. as well as less issues with vanos.
Also theres only one engine so you dont after hunt down a 3.2
A e36 has vast moneypit potential compared to a e46.

Hmm, I know the vanos craic and that the arches are desperate on most e36's these days.

The problem is the initial cost of buying the E46

hmm, my girlfriend hasn't responded well to the BMW... she's told me to put in for my race/rally licence and sort a rally car out.

Can't say fairer than that..... so ITB 306 Rally car it looks like now haha

owned an e36 and e46 m3. my e36 m3 was also an estoril, it was 6spd with black vader

not a lot can touch them on the road, they are like 0-100 in 12 seconds max, they are ruthlessly quick. i would take the e36 over my e46 m3 again no problems



the e46 is better built and sounds phenomenal, but i don't think they are the sort of car you chuck about an drift around like a madman in compared to the e36

btw the vanos hype is overrated. you can spend a lifetime worrying about the vanos issues, to be honest all i heard about them was vanos this vanos that Blah

i had issues with the vanos on my e36 m3, but so what?! it's a group 20 insurance car and runs rings around most supercars, why would you be worried about a £1000 bill in your ownership? i had issues with the vanos, rebuilt it twice at a cost of about £800 each time (first time i bought it and then 4yrs later but that wasn't critically needing it - it just got very noisy, but they do, so don't worry).

mine was the evo model (3.2, 321bhp) and i had to replace the shockers, springs, RTAB's, vanos unit rebuild twice, fuel pump, brake lines, shock mounts, engine out to fix a leaking sensor, heater unit, few other things. so what? i had fun, and used 17 sets of 245/40/17 eagle f1's and about 3 sets of 225/45/17 fronts. no biggie LOL it's comparitive to a gti6, just higher up the line Yes

e46, i only had to put tyres on it. should never have sold that car, it was immaculate but i had to raise £35k+ deposit for a house Doh

Exactly, everyone always s**ts bricks about the Vanos on these, until they realise they have to buy a £600 set of tyres every six months and pay a grand a year to service the thing.

If you can't afford to replace the Vanos, you can't afford to run an M3. End of. Buy something else.

tbh they don't fully die anyway, the gears inside just wear and start to make noise. mine always made noises even when it was completely reconditioned with all new gears, seals, the lot. they are a massive part of the car though and make it what it is. it's like not buying a gti6 because the 6th gear may or may not die at some point in the next 10 years

Beautiful cars. The e36 and e46 are both very different cars, but awesome machines. I still love the looks and raw handling of the e36. I bet you can pick them up dirt cheap, these days. Hmm

yeah but do they do them in hardcore manual? no flappy cock box?

the e36's can be bought for like £3k now but they are still a £50k car with the same running costs. they could absolutely ruin you no problem so it's pretty vital to be handy with spanners to help get your costs down LOL

This is very true. I'm s**te with spanners, but work at a BMW delership, so can get cheap parts and there's always a grease monkey willing to help out.

I've go a hankering for an e30, at the moment. E30 m3, maybe? Hmm

theres a lot of things about the e30 that put me off

A Its price is now well beyond resonable
B they are left hand drive.
C you will want one of the rarer evos as well which a more dollar
D a 123d hatch would show it a clean pair of heels Sad

I still love them though, i would love to drop a m5 v10 in with a me box like the bloke on pistonheads has Shock

I was just trying to make sure he knew what he was getting into, old m3s dont need more people buying them and then going f**k this car was previously 48k and has massive running costs.
I only say this because i want one myself but am holding out for more dollar and a mint mcmint one

Definitely the right thing to do, as you say so many of them have had a million owners, none of whom could afford to run it properly. Mate of mine went to look at an e46 CSL once that had budget tyres on it, that's the kinda thing you want to avoid. Does not bode well for the car's history.

Yeah, If I saw one with budgets on i would Definetly walk away thats for sure.
Its a car you get from a club imo if you can.

I love the door cards on them though, and the steering wheel, and the airbox, and the roof, and the front bumper and the rear bootlid, and the wheels and THE NOISE.

Basically ultimate car imo.
