Car broke down last night, seems to be having problems with fueling, coughing and spluttering not picking up revs just stalling. RAC man seems to agree its the fuel pump and we tested the coilpack etc. Strangely the problem first came about going round a fast left hand bend, the problem then became worse going round the exact same corner! So obviously the fuel pump can't handle the extra G-Force put on it under heavy cornering.

Would you guys agree with the diagnosis, anything else I should try?

Anyway, are all petrol fuel pumps on the 306 the same or will I need one specifically from a GTI?

Cheers
Tom

What colour is your car?

Spotted a China '6 knocking about the other evening.

Funnily enough it was in the petrol station, so may have been you LOL

Yeah that'll be you then. Was Saturday afternoon/eve. Sainsbury's.

Unfortunately not. Will have a Xsara VTS one shortly, but I imagine the housing is probably different. Worth a question I suppose.

I couldn't say when it was last changed tbh, is it likely to cause such big problems?

Don't think it was me actually, must be another lurking around! Was it dropped about 60mm? I've seen a Dturbo in China with Black wheels around running a silly ride height.

The internet seems to think the fuel pump is the same in the xsara actually.

How much do you want for it CJM?

I didn't pay a huge amount of notice. Saw a China ph3 as I passed.

Well if it is the same and your in no immediate rush then it's yours for a tenner.

Yes, if it is clogged and not allowing sufficient fuel flow.

It probably isn't the cause in this case, but it is worth a check especially as you don't know when it was changed. Yes

Check your battery is properly secure and connections are tight it could be your battery is moving about bringing the terminals loose on the bends it happened to me recently

Well changed the fuel pump and it hasn't made any difference. So it must be a fuel pressure problem. Anyone get any ideas? I'm gona start checking all the fuel lines next. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator?

Is this a constant problem or just on heavy cornering?

Did you change the fuel filter in the end? I've got a few bits and bobs here you can try as an elimination exercise if you like.

This is the order I would look at things in:

Check battery terminals for tightness and corrosion.
Check all earths to make sure they are tight and corrosion free.
    Change the fuel filter.

Let us know how you get on. Thumbs up

I hadn't even considered it could be electrical, but sure enough it seems the battery box has broken and the battery shifted. So that would explain the left hand cornering issue.

So if I disconnect and reconnect the battery the car will drive ok again, but coughs and splutters. However after driving it a bit last night it seems to be absolutely fine again!

Its been having starting problems recently aswell so I'm going to try and get to the gearbox earth tonight and give that a good clean up, and the same with the battery terminals.

    Thanks for the help
