that's the vacuum pump. mine always had a bit of oil in and i didn't have issues. i assume the end cam seal is leaking or maybe it provides lubrication through a keyway, not honestly sure due to never looking properly, but every one i've removed has had oil in it (i would say about a couple of thimble fulls of oil). after all it is driven by the cam. i dismantled mine the other week on the engine for my 205 gti6 because i had the cam covers off, and that also had a bit oil in it

yup they are lubricated by oil., I doubt you will get any in the servo given its a VACUUM pump......

mei: off topic a bit but servo related: fitting my gti6 MC to my 205 servo and it was fouling. i wound the rod in a few turns (gripped it with some mole grips whilst turning the adjusting knoblet thingy) and it's fitted fine now. is this just a case of trial and error to get the right pedal feel? or is this not wise practice? didn't know how much winding it in will effect pedal travel. no lines attached to car yet so unable to check. lots of people run gti6 mc's on their 205's so unsure why mine needed adjusting. unless everyone else does adjust theirs but just doesn't mention it. wound it in about 3-4mm

there is a specific measurement it should be, shown in the haynes IIRC, it will affect how quickly the brakes start working from when you hit the pedal.

I don't know why they would need adjusting after the initial factory setting tbh.

the 205 MC worked fine, the gti6 one needs the rod winding in a bit, god knows what has been done with the car in the past. it was a trackcar with cage and buckets. luckily for me i have nothing else to do in my mundane mediocre life so i'll be testing the brakes for the next 6 months using various MC rod settings.

Yes, the vac pump is lubricated by the engine oil as Mei says...

As for powering the servo, yes it is fed from the inlet manifold which is also running under vacuum...Yes

Ricky, I adjusted mine by trial and error, I kept winding mine out half a turn at a time and eventually the brakes where locked on with no one pressing the brake pedal LOL , think I then wound it in by half to one full turn, I found on the Gti-6 I could take the master cylinder off with the brake lines still attached so I didn't have to be constantly re-bleeding,

If its too far in you will have a long pedal

Try taking the lower mount bolt out, then undo the top 4 nuts n bolts enough but not completely off so the engine can move downwards enough to easily take mc off without having to bleed them.
