Got some tapping going on. Not comfy with it. Is it something that can be fixed by someone re-doing the timing?

once a tapper, always a tapper,

depends what kind of tap it is really, is it constant? does it increase in speed with more throttle?

Roll eyes

Sounds like you've got a classic tapper then. Sad
Head off job and replace those valves. Yes

It can be several different things. A sticky follower, loose spark plug or a bent valve head following a snapped cam belt. Unfortunately, only one of those problems is easy to check up on.

    Pretty sure it's a tapping

The cam belt has snapped in the past.

As I'm not too confident with anything engine-wise is anyone near/passing Uttoxeter who wouldn't mind having a little look one day?

The very fact it has history of a cambelt snap tells me it will probably be a bent valve tap. Yes Sad

Does it sound like a sewing machine? Dunno

That's actually quite a good way to describe it lol. I was fairly sire it was going to end up being a valve too.

    Oh dear. Sad

Unfortunately looking at around £600 for the repair if you do it yourself, more if you add someone else's labour. Yes

valves are around a tenner each, plus gasket £40, head bolts £20, belt kit £60, WP £24.

there's also the labour to recut the valve seats and skim the head, IF its possible, as there's a max of 0.25mm that can be taken off, if the head has already been off it'll be better to just source another good head.

Well, if you're going to do it as Welshpug says there is all that lot to buy. Yes

As well as that, don't forget you'll need an oil/filter change and a coolant change too.
New exhaust manifold gasket too, these are £20.

Sometimes buying a complete engine that it known to be a good runner is the most cost-effective way of doing it. Yes

Yeah would be cheapest but I'm thinking of getting the whole engine rebuilt with pocketed pistons etc to run decent cams etc been getting a couple of quotes to weigh up options that's all
