I was cleaning up the rust on the block ready for it's respray, saw some corrosion around the holes on the front of the engine. Poked around with the screwdriver lightly tapping it with a hammer to remove old rust and this happened:

Now the following questions i need answered:

A: Is it a hole that will cause problems if left?
B: Possible to weld it up and close it that way?
C: New engine/block time??

I need a response asap please!

It's a core plug. Should be able to replace just the plug

Do not weld or leave it As it'll just throw coolant out

As said it's just a core plug, so replaceable. Given the state of the engine it might be a good idea to replace them all.

Part number is 0234 03 and they are currently £1.21 each.

They look like caps so basically pull out what's left of the dead one clean everything and they press back in (fairly tightly)

To get em out, whack em on the edge with a punch and it should rotate round so you can pull it out with pliers and a bit of wiggling. Ideally you should try and find a socket or something to use as a drift, so you get even pressure around the edges and then gently tap it in until its a nice tight fit.

I had a core plug pop out once on one of our classic cars, wasn't fun! Hopefully shouldn't be too bad to fix though Smile One of those things you may as well do while the engine is out.

When I built my high boost engine (which is now in Russbez's car) I replaced all of the core plugs as a matter of course when I built the lump up. Yes

I just wanted the build to be completely fresh. Wink

This... It's one of those things that often gets missed out when engines are rebuilt. For the price and peace of mind having new ones in I don't understand why.

Indeed, at £1.21 per plug it's a bit of a no-brainer. Smile

Not a problem, at least you can relax now knowing you haven't got a hole in the 'actual' block. LOL

What happened to the rusty bit that came off? Did that go in the engine? Unsure

Rich,

If it were me building that engine I would get the block hot washed so all the oil ways and coolant passages are nice and clear before you start the build. Yes

Stan.
