So my engine bay has been pretty honking for quite some time now and i know people are dubious about having people use pressure washers under there but i made sure the snorkel was covered and made sure the guy didnt go that mental. Used a degreaser and for a fiver got most of it looking much better than it was

Didnt think to get a before shot but here it is as of now.....

Will need to use elbow grease and a scourer to get any better than this i think

No offence but it still looks fairly dirty to be honest. Get those black tubes nice and shiny.

Cheeky sod! I guess thats what i get for not doing a before shot. Trust me before everything was covered in grease.....Matt will tell you, it was honkinggg!!!

I know its not mint yet but if i decide i can be arsed to go to work on it, thats a good base to start fromBig grin

It looks like your cam covers may have been leaking in the past.

While it's clean, whip them off and pop some sealent along the existing seal and pop them back on.

    Good work Chris for getting it done after nearly a year of me nagging you. It was f**king filthy!!!!!!! Told ya them foreigners are sometimes good for something.

    You have a keen eye.....i think they have been leaking for some time and it is on the list of things to do as i do have to top the oil up every now and then

    What sort of sealant should i be using? Is it simply a case of taking bolts out, pulling covers up, scraping dead seals off and putting new seal on and torquing up correctly? Seems a pretty simple procedure. I might attempt it in a couple weeks when i have some time off work

    Don't scrape the seal off as they are bonded to the covers. Yes

    Simply remove as you say, clean up the sealing surface and then add a small bead of sealant. Refit and torque up. Thumbs up

    Good quality RTV sealant, google some using shopping, i use the clear type so any oil leaks can be seen quicker and looks neater imo.

    I have put a thin layer of oil on the head so when i take them off for painting thet will come off easy, then scrape the old sealnt on the covers, then clean them and head well then torque them in the correct torque sequence, as in a circular way.

    Yes, torque them in the same pattern as you would a set of head bolts. Yes

    I love the smoothed bay look of the VAG's. I wish the pug engine bays were easier to tidy

    No the wiring is all in the chassis legs so nope none to be seen.

    I used the black Loctite branded RTV sealant that halfords sell for a few quid a tube.

    Only used a thin bead and it's still dry as a bone a year on. The covers were practically drowned in sludge before.
