Hi all,
Just acquired my dad's red 306 Rallye. Just a little different to my old Hilux Surf!

Just a couple of questions along with being a newbie,

1) It seems to get pretty warm in traffic or just going slow in town. Like 95ish - I put the heater on full whack after that, didn't fancy testing the temp limits after one day. What should it be at as a 'normal' temp? (My old Rover's head gasket was dead so I had to put up with endless over heating. Also after changing the Hilux's water pump it never overheated afterwards. Do I need to think about these previous experiences?)

2) I've been told the cam belt failed a few years ago, I guess that's where the ticking noise came from. Judging by the stuff written on this forum, I guess it's the timing not 100% perfect. only seems to be audible above 2000rpm.

3) Dad seemed to think the clutch is knackered, any recommendations? main dealers and the like can sod off.

4) Central locking works from passenger side, not drivers side, is this a known issue? Maybe a connection somewhere?

5) looking around at some front splitters and most seem horrendous, anything nice and subtle anyone can recommend?

6) Will be getting an alarm/immobiliser system installed once I get a little more money, I'm sure some of you have ones you can recommend.

Should be a good few months ahead of fun Smile
Alex

Howdy. Wave

I am not a mechanic by any means but I believe the '6/rallye do have a tendancy to run hot in traffic but out of experience (HG failure on mine 2 yrs ago) I would suggest getting it checked over.
Again with regards with the tapping if it was a 'snaper' that would be best being checked for peace of mind.

Someone on here will be along who is able to give you more benoficial advise LOL

Welcome to the club! Smile

Rad cooling fan should kick in at around 97 degrees IIRC, so sounds like it's normal. Mine does it and I think all other Gti's/Rallye's do too. Still scary when you're not used to it though!

Welcome by the way.

Another Red Rallye is always welcome!

For parts I would check main dealers first to get a feel for the price. I say this as I found a pattern exhaust from a well-known chain was the same price as a genuine one from the dealers. So I would always check first you may be surprised on some things but not on others.

Wave welcome! as said another Rallye is always welcome Smile

check out the standard ph2 splitter that's just a black strip that runs along the bottom of the bumper

water sounds about right these do get quite hot in traffic as long as your fans are running ok you shouldn't have a problem

if clutch needs changing its quite a big job either engine out or box off while in the car,.. a few people on here may be able to help you out as there are a few mechanics on here! swerve the main dealer's don't call them Peugeot monkeys for nothing!

central locking try looking at the door loom where it meets the body of the car see if there's a bad connection or broken wire maybe,

it should already have a standard alarm immobiliser,.. what you'd probably spend more on some top notch thing than you'd safe on you're insurance anyway! just don't park anywhere shady and it should be fine!
garage would be a bonus!

Welcome Wave

Mine has a tendancy to run hot in traffic and i'm not a lover of hot running, when i bought it the fan switch wasn't working so i wired a switch to the dash(sorry die hards, it's discreet!) Just lets me control it properly!

You'll find all the info you need in here somewhere, just use the search bar! Thumbs up

Rallyes have key code immobiliser only, there is no alarm like there is on GTI-6.

Welcome. Wave

Head gaskets aren't really a problem on these engines it's all to do with how it's been maintained, like caning it from cold etc. mine has covered 120k and is on the original head gasket. One common cause for HG problems is the cooling fans not working and the car over heating massively.

In general these engines are pretty damn strong so as long as you maintain it you'll be fine Yes

Welcome matey
Can't beat the old cherry rallyes!
They do run hot, specially when the fan doesn't kick in! May be worth making sure it does kick in though
The last thing you want is a cracked block like mine did from a none functioning fan!
Go for the standard gti6/rallye splitter

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so fecking temperamental.

Hello matey,

To add further reassurance on the fan/temperature issue, that sounds normal. For info, a search on here may reveal two temperatures at which fans kick in, but the Rallye only has 1, to the GTi-6's 2.

Enjoy it! Thumbs up

Still got the original, bit manky. Was thinking a nice shiny new one wouldn't go a miss.
