I can't believe you've never done a belt before Chris, I thought you were up on all mechanical work...

To change it or loosen it off to do the cambelt?
You only need to loosen the 2 x 13mm bolts holding the tensioner on and then unwind the 6mm allen head tensioning bolt and the belt will go loose. Yes

Then you will need to release the tensioner by using a ratchet and turning the whole thing to get enough slack on the belt Yes

Ah I see that's pretty easy then once you release the tensioner. Try swapping the set up over to a rallye version and see how long it takes Yes

i might do that actually, the piping and air con rad have already been removed by previous owner so it would make sense to get rid of the pump too. first got to sort the problems out though.

cambelt and water pump were done shortly after i got the car, aux belt was meant to be done at the same time but was supplied with the wrong part. went and got a refund on it and ordered the replacement but dealing with the fault i kinda forgot til they rang today and said the belt has been sat on the shelf ages do i still want it haha

It's not that hard a task to change the setup over, just very fiddly and working in confined spaces. Wink
