Yeah this is pretty major.
The way these gangs steal them is sooooo intelligent too.
Basically i was reading somewhere that they intercept your fob when you lock it. Go into the car, connect up to the obd2 thingy scan it for the key code.
PUT a gps transmitter in it :O
walk away and lock the car

Come back to it two days later with a coded key and job done
WTF

Clearly they either work for bmw or have purchased/ got hold of thie equipment

Nah, you have it wrong, they smash the window by the obd port( which is not picked up by the factory alarm due to a problem by bmw) reach down to the obd port and reprogram a new key there and then using that device in the second vid. Then they simply unlock the car and drive it away using the newly reprogrammed key.

theres plenty of threads on it on piston heads. Its just theifs moving with the times i suppose, does make you think why is the obd port live when the car is off?

I think there must be two groups doing it then as I have seen people reporting that two.
Ie
there are definatly people getting their cars nicked as there is a gps sender under their seat and the theif already has their keys.

I'll find a link when i can

Its very simple how they do it. They just get hold of the BMW diag software and hardware (there will be cheap copies like Peugeot planet) and reprogram a new key to your car. BMW have overlooked the security of the software. If you ever used Peugeot planet, you will notice that you need a code to work with any of the security features (code on the card that came with the car). BMW missed that bit....

If you've lost the key and need to reprogram a new one, how else would you do it? Thumbs up

Trackers seem to be the only way to stop them disappearing at cost, although if you can afford an expensive BMW then why not..

You order a key from the dealer to turn the ignition on like any other car first.

Pretty mental really.

Kinda makes me laugh, would probably take longer to steal a 10 year old GTi6 LOL

Ive seen that lot of people are re routing the cable somewhere else in the dashboard /footwell area.

The best option ive seen is people fitting a rocker switch somewhere under the passenger seat etc. To control the operation of the port

Might be a daft question but i guess they dont have the locking barrel thing on the steering column to lock the steering wheel?

We have a BMW with this key system, basically the obd port is live all the time. When you insert the key it turns the ignition on, then press the start button and it does just what it says.

The steering lock doesn't disengage until the start button is pressed and the key is recognised, don't forget the theifs are coding the key first, once coded the steering lock with de activate and then they start the car and drive off.

Seems like a bit of a step backwards to me in terms of vehicle security.

I'm just glad there doesnt seem to be a demand for stealing 306's. Laugh

I expect BMW will deny anything is wrong, claim to have had no complaints and continue to live on their age old reputation of being really reliable....again. How can people dare to question their amazing German engineering, it's not like they've ever designed any cars that would self ingest manifold parts or have alloys that crack or anything like that.

They've done their bit to discourage diesel ownership, which can only be a good thing.

Also, the GTi-6 owners club should be careful who they criticise given your cam belts started snapping at about half the interval Peugeot recommended. LOL

It certainly put me off diesels, although the modern ones should be sorted on that matter. Your second point is a very good one to be fair LOL
