Afternoon chaps

Wondering if anyone can advise on if there are any ' idiot guides' on how to do an oil change on the GTI6? ... I reckon mines is definitely due an oil change but have never done one before.

I have been told off a mate that i should use this (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_203587_langId_-1_categoryId_255221)

Followed by this oil - (

From what i can gather i'm hearing a slight tap when idle so i'm hoping that its only an oil change thats needed!

Can anyone please offer any tips for a complete novice?

Drive the car to garage, open wallet, pay mechanic to change oil and filter, drive home with nice clean hands, simples.

Failing that, drive the car to get it up to normal operating temperature, jack up, support the car on axle stands, put down plenty of cardboard, find a suitable container (Something that will hold at least 5 litres of old oil) remove sump bung (19mm I think) drain oil, remove filter, you may need a filter wrench or Gorrilla grip hands, dont slip and spear the radieator! Wipe excess oil off the front of the block. Lubricate the rubber seal of new filter with a dab of clean engine oil, spinn it on and tighten firmly by hand. Replace sump bung and copper washer in the sump, fill with 5 litres (Check correct ammount, I have a poor memory) of engine oil. Drop the car back down on the ground, drive for ten minutes, allow to cool and check oil. Top up as necessary. But if you had to ask, then you probably don't have much in the way of tools, jacks, containers etc. So I refer you to my first post LOL

i wouldnt use the oil treatment stuff

just change the oil

indeed, all that stuff is just horrid chemicals that mess everything up inside your engine. Like that redex stuff.

cool thanks for that guys .. think i got lost after the bit ' remove sump bung ' lol ... i really am useless with a spanner.

thinking that taking it to a garage will be my easiest option .. financial constraints are a bit tight at the minute so trying to do it the cheap (by doing it myself)

anyone in or around glasgow fancy helping ! lol

what about the grade of oil is that decent enough?

A jack and axle stands and a halfords professional tool set would be useful.
Jack under the front sil (notch behind small square cut out) . axle stand under the subframe (in the recess part).
Buy a black plastic Halfords Oil catcher and put some cardboard under that.
You need a crushable copper washer from pug and an oil filter.
It makes sense to change air filter (pug) at the same time.
Maybe even the gearbox oil (pug plus need a crushable washer) (buy a Halfords Orange long neck filter to refil gearbox oil through the breather plug on the top of the gearbox. 2 * 1 litre of pug gear box oil.
And plugs if they have not been done in the last 20,000 miles (Halfords do a nice plug socket)
Mobil 1 0-40 is has the most similar properties to the OEM Quartz oil but is a synthetic. It comes down to the right viscosity at low and high temps. Its not cheap but its good. Nice engine note too.
4.7 litres from total empty. 4.5 litres after a drain. 1.5 litres between botton and top of dipstick.
A bottle of Forte gas treatment in the fuel tank would also help the car run better.

Do you not have any mates capable that could supervise you of an evening?

It really is very simple and only requires following a simple list of steps.

I appreciate where you are coming from with limited knowledge - we all have to start somewhere.

Mull over the FAQ and shine a torch under your car and familiarise yourself with the sump plug, see if you have the right sized socket etc. Build up the confidence and when you have the items needed to do it crack on of a dry afternoon.

There was a lad on here who had engine problems and was worried about swapping his engine over. A few FAQ's later and some guidance and he ended up getting carried away and doing a complete overhaul from what I remember. You'll soon realise from getting under the car and looking at how to access to filter etc whether you feel confident or not.

The above is not meant to sound patronising LOL

I'm in the sunny east end of glasgow smithers .. and thanks for the replies chaps much appreciated.

I do have some axles that i could put the car on which is a start but i dont really have the tools for the rest of it (mainly coz i wouldn't trust myself!)

It's annoying as from what you guys have said .. it is a straight forward enough job .. and would be good to have the satisfication to say that i managed ut ..

That said I'm heading off next weekend for a few days and was hoping to have the coolent / oil filters etc changed so might need to stick into a garage

Coolant is a bit more of a pain in fairness. I can never be arsed with it.
Box and engine oil are a piece of pee though.

Box particullarly as theres no faffing with a filter and theres less to drain

Im not sure on the differnence but if you cant get a TO then an AL is the new part number for the fine long lasting joby

Not sure if i should be changing spark plugs when smithers and i are changing the oil? I had a conversion done 2 years ago and dont really cover that many miles .. so not sure if i should bother changing the plugs as they should be fairly new?
