Just taken the head off the block and am looking at this:

With gasket still in place:

Gasket removed:

Bores:

Can't see any rust so is this block service-able?

Also, on the head, how could you tell if it's been skimmed in the past? I know there are supposed to be notches to indicate min amounts but I can't see them - where are they located?

Oh and is this normal?

measure the overall height of the head, that'll tell you if it has been skimmed, it certainly needs it as there's a lot of corrosion there, bores look rather shiny.

std height - 137 ± 0.05

minimum height - 136.8 ± 0.05

http://petrila.net/peugeot/Service/406d8/info/gb/b1db2ck3.htm

the thrust side of your bores do look quite worn, also quite a lip at the top though not always a massive concern as it'll be carbon buildup above the top ring, best to measure the bores before going any further with that bottom end.

Given that there are three different types of inlet valve fitted I'd say the engine has been apart at least twice before, so the head has probably been skimmed twice at least.

Why scrap it, yes it needs work but having it thinner is no issue, Mind you might have to spend a good few quid on it to get it back to std
