And its finally going back on the road! Only this time I'm not running it, a mate is going to use it.

So Saturday we go to start it up, flat battery obviously so bump it and all is going well, stutters a bit but few revs clears that up and off we go to the MOT station, all booked in and day insured I might add. Very foggy so lights on which turned out to be a mistake! Half a mile down the road, car cuts out and won't bump start, turns out alarm must have had a fit due to low battery power and the immobilser cut in. So figured that out and get it going again, lights off this time and all is well.

Drove 10 mile ish to the MOT station and it all felt fine, like it'd never been off the road. Seemed to pull well too but its bound to feel strong to me as my daily drive is a Passat diesel lol

Gets MOT'd tomorrow so will see how it goes but its covered less then 2k since its last MOT so I'm sure all will be well.

Await comments that people would never trust their car to a mate...

Sounds good, a question for you. I think I know but not 100%.

If the car is SORNed and then the MOT runs out.

When you decide to put it back on the road, you sort the insurance and book the MOT. However, without the MOT you can't tax the vehicle, so does that mean you can drive it to the testing station and back home again afterwards whilst still under SORN conditions? Common sense tells me yes, as I can't see another way of doing it, but I am not 100% sure having never done it before.

Cheers. Wink

Stan, checked with DVLA myself on that and they told me I'd need insurance AND for it to be booked into a MOT station. I could then legally drive it to the MOT station. I was still paranoid some gimp would drive into me though so I followed my mate in his car and my mrs followed me in my car lol

Oh and day insurance cost me 22 quid for 24 hours.

Yes Stan you can drive to the MOT station on the SORN. As you say, you need the MOT to tax it.

What gets me though is that you can book the Mot anywhere you like, so if you live in Liverpool I could drive to Leicester (and back) for an Mot, and that's legal, even though the car has not been driven for 3 years say (and could be a deathtrap) Dunno ,

just done similar to you with my Mitsubishi Colt (Mot place 8 miles away) and the only thing that I don't get is the re-test, mine failed on emissions,

So I fixed leaks in exhaust with jubilee clips, exhaust paste and an old biscuit tin (bodgetastic) and I took the car back for a retest, as I know the tester he tested the emissions and said it would still fail so I took the car home got a new Lambda and then took it back and it passed,

Now I assume I was legal for the re-test but not when I first took the car back and got the emissions tested? or as I know the tester if I was stopped by plod and they phoned the tester to see if I was booked in or not, would they take his word for it?, or does my name and car have to be booked into the Dvla computer by the tester (before I set out), confused I am tbh Crazy

Well it went for an MOT yesterday and not surprisingly, failed! Theres a leak from the fuel filter, which is probably due to it being stood for 3 year, windsceen washers need adjusting and emissions are high but they would be, it has no cat lol so new fuel filter and washers adjusted, all is well. For a car thats been stood for 3 year, I don't think you can complain at that!

Next issue, lost V5 lol so had to order a new un! So in a few days my mate will be knocking around in a GTI-6 while he fixes up his 406 Coupe.

Well for those interested, which is prob no-one lol its passed its MOT today at the grand total of £100, including price of MOT and cost of putting the old exhaust on and off again for emissions. For a car thats been stood nearly 3 year, 100 quid seems nowt to me!

Will look forward to my mate nipping round mine in it so I can have a quick blast now and then!

Well, my mate went out in it last night, been a passenger before but never driven it. Text me saying its better then he remembers and loves it. Glad someone is enjoying it, kinda wish it was me putting it back on the road but might run it a bit when he gives it me back! My Passat is good as a daily car, comfy and quiet but dog slow and handles like a soggy jelly, I miss fun driving!
