Firstly I realise that this is not in the right forum so sorry about that.

Ok so my 6 has been off the road for a couple of years now which is why I don't really come on here much (I hope to run it again one day after I get the missus to learn to drive and she can have the diesel leon). I walked past it earlier and noticed a smell of petrol and a light patch of petrol on the drive. Had a wee investigation and found that the filler to tank elbow is leaking, I presume it has cracked after its many years of service.

Now the problem I have is that if I pull this elbow off the petrol will follow and since there is nearly a full tank in it I'm loathe to let it go. Anyone got any ideas how I can save the majority of this fuel? So far I have come up with jack it up as high as possible on one side to keep the fuel in the tank but still most of it is going to come out anyway. As well as this I thought of buying some of those plastic boxes to catch the fuel and then once the new elbow is in place fill her back up using a watering can or something like that. Do these ideas seem like a good plan or a precursor to a disaster involving large quantities of petrol, flame and human flesh?

Think I saw somewhere that the elbow in question is about 30 quid? Robbing bas**rds if thats true.

sadly, you have to get a couple of VERY clean bowls, and get the petrol in them.

Then you will have to get the 30quid elbow joint, its a b**ch to get on but if you leave it in boiling hot water for 15mins, that will get it softer and will be much easier to get on.

if i was you i would get a nice clean bucket and use thatto catch the fuel,you shouldnt have to empty the tank completely. and yeah there round about that sort of price,make sure you got couple of big dubble clips when you fit the new filler next

surely if it's been off the road for two years, the petrol will have 'gone off' anyway?

No idea, it still starts ok and doesn't sound as though its struggling when idling. It'll probably be another year before it gets run at least, I just don't want to break it as I have spent so much effort on fixing it and its just not worth selling for the pittance ill get for it.

Sounds like its going to be a fun day, least its nice weather for it!

Just take the fuel pipe off the rail and switch the ignition on, straight into a container Smile

I tried that when mine split, but the pump trips or turns off after a few seconds.

If you're not going to be using it then I'd just chop the hose and let it spill out onto some gravel or something. Just make sure you're not smoking at the timeLOL

I had a full tank when mine split and it was a right ballache

    Precisely. The petrol will still work, i've left cars that long before and they ran fine on the juice. Lift up the back seat and pump it out.

    Failing that, if it's less than half a tank jack the drivers side right up before changing the elbow - it's what i did with my HDi with circa 20 litres in the tank, however remove it if you can.

    Just pull off the return pipe from the fuel rail and start the car and collect it in whatever your going to use, when I changed my elbow I jacked the car as high as I could so all the fuel went to the other side, tank wasn't full like but wasn't far off
