Evening all,

A mate of mine is after a cheap car to run between London and Cornwall. He has no interest what they look like, as he really doesn't give a s**t about cars.

Anyway, he's got around 1k to spend so I sent him in the normal direction of a trusty 306 hdi or dt. However, another few options could make it a bit easier to find a decent car.

I know this is a pug forum, but a lot of us have second cars or previous experience of Fords, s**treons etc, so could anyone let me know if the following cars are problematic at all (within normal tolerances for a 1k car.)

2000 Focus 1.8 tdi (90 bhp)
Citreon Xsara HDI (110bhp)
406 HDI (110bhp) (same engine as above I presume)
Astra 1.8 dti

Any other options worth looking at?

Cheers
Graham

406 1.9 dTurbo. Not that quick, but cheap and very hard to kill.

I know some gypsy will suggest a 106 diesel but for that sort of distance I'd want something nice and comfortable so something like a 406 would be near the top of my wish list.

I'd rule the focus out. If you can find one cheap enough, there's another vote here for the 206 1.4Hdi, they're brilliant wee engines. Can be a bit noisy though, so if you want some comfort, maybe the 406 is the way to go. You could even get a 406 coupe diesel for not a lot of money now if you want a bit of pininfarina style lol.

I've had 3 x 406 HDi's over the years, and done about 30 - 40k in each of them. Out of the two versions (90 & 110) i prefer the 110 as its slightly better on fuel IMO. We went to Europe a few years back in my 2000 Hdi 110, and did 978 miles on a tank of diesel (when the light came on). Worked out at about 60mpg, and that was 4 up, loaded and motorway miles. Very very comfortable and really reliable, all i ever changed was the bottom pulley and rear suspension top links (they knock when worn). All of them had well over 100k on when I bought them as well.

Not as many issues with them as 306's TBH, and they still look a pretty car. I wouldnt hesitate to have another if i needed one.

Thanks for all your replys. So is that 110bhp 2.0 engine in the 406, the same as that found in the Xsara and 206 2.0 hdi. All of these options are fairly cheap but I'm not sure if the 406 will be a bit too big for London driving?

Cheers

Focus tddi engine is bomb proof and i know vast amounts with well over 200k on the clock

Ive had loads of diesels inc the quick vag 130/150 tdis aswell as pug 1.9 td and hdi

I find the hdi smoothest of the lot but find a good one

Im getting another focus tddi tomorrow as i cant fault them in anyway,

Im sure its the same as in the Xsara, the 206 used the 90bhp version from memory. Its the intercooled 8v hdi, simple is best!

It'd be fine for London, unless the roads are smaller down there?LOL

He drives like a gay and looks like a twink, but he needs something midsized to carry his board, so he can't anything too big like a 406 estate or small like a 106.

The Xsara looks to be a happy medium, although I doubt it will last too long given he has written off every car he has ever owned!

I think the one I was looking at was a 1.8 tdi, not a tdci. Are they the same?

TDCI is the common rail engine matey, They have dual mass flywheels and typical tdci issues etc etc

TDDI is excellent old school, solid flywheel cheap clutch if needs done and hassle free injectors etc etc just make sure its had a cambelt and happy days

All of the above, bar the Pauxhall, would fit his bill nicely.

I'd take the Xsara HDi or the HDi 306. 406's were cheaper though and just as comfy.
