To celebrate my 6's one year anniversary, i took the car for a drive yesterday and the ABS light came on (the orange light with skid marks), it stayed on for 30 mins until i stopped, then disappeared, then returned this morning. it gets worse...

...when braking in neutral, the brakes feel hollow, like im pressing the petal on bare metal and makes a noise as such.

braking in gear thus far feels normal.

assumings its related to ABS light.

(and there was extra smoking coming out of exhaust)

any tips guys?

How often are you in neutral while braking? Unsure

its a habit...as is changing gears with clutch down in corners...bad i know but my driving isnt the issue here Sad

the brakes have always worked fine in neutral

Because doing anything in neutral uses more fuel.

erm, no shirley you use less petrol in neutral as gear revs are on 0. no fuel expenditure, car slows down, then gradually brake.

No - a modern car, slowing, in gear, uses zero fuel as the wheels keep the engine turning. Idling however requires fuel. Doesn't matter what revs you're at, engine management shouldn't be pouring fuel into your engine if it's not needed.

I'd be surprised if even the '6 doesn't do it, but yes I have an Astra.

Any car with fuel injection I'd say would use less fuel leaving in gear rather putting in neutral and coasting, as previously mentioned, wheels rotating keep the engine running.

Back to the thread, assume you've checked the brake pads? Are you sure extra smoke is actually coming out the exhaust and rear brakes aren't binding?

On a different note, vacuum pump? Perhaps not pulling the pressure it should when the engine's idling?

They've done this since about the 80's, that old enough for you?

Plus the extra engine braking it gives you, so puts less load on your brakes, helps prevent lockups etc.

ok so we have established whats better for fuel economy...brilliant.

we still need to establish why its not braking correctly when in neutral. it does feel like how it did when i was slipping in the snow last weekend, which i believe was ABS kicking in so def related.

Have you checked the fluid level?? Brake lines also? My old meridian had perished brake lines.

Worth a look i say. Forget about the ABS for now it's a bloody hinderance anyway Big grin
