Purchased a car with a 13 row oil cooler already fitted, but disconnected, went out to get it plumbed up and came across a damage thread on the oil cooler union Sad

Damaged

Undamaged

Doesn't appear as though I can retap it, and the piece appears to welded/soldered onto the oil cooler so won't be able to get it off either No

I was thinking of chopping off the thread with an angle grinder, flatten it out and weld one of these :

Anyone else got any bright ideas? Surely must have happened to someone else

thx

You're right ally welding can't really be done with an oxy kit, I thinks, I'll head to uni, I'm sure I can plea with the technician to do it Big grin

Is the female thread okay? If its just a new male piece needed cant you buy one or get a machime shop to knock one up? Its not a lot of work thats for sure.

If I was u, given that it's the oil cooler and it's part of one of the most required systems on the engine, just buy a new cooler, it will be a nightmare to weld anyway and if it springs a leak u could be lookin at bye bye engine. For the cost of it just buy a new cooler save urself a lot of potential heartache! Thumbs up

Agreed, it may be 100 quid or whatever a new cooler is, still cheaper than an engine + fitting.

A 13 row cooler is around the £80 mark.

I appreciate where everyone is coming from. But surely it's not beyond reasonable repair just for the sake of a damage thread?

I was thinking if I cut and leave 2/3's of the existing nut on and then weld the other piece on top of that, then weld some other pieces to the frame of the cooler or a pieces around the two weld joints, that'll make it a very strong joint and the possibility of leaking slim?

I got a feeling even if I do get it done, I'll always have a lingering feeling what if it gives way Sad

That's not a bad price at all! I need 3/4 threads though, otherwise I'd have to fork out for new piping Sad

Doesn't really matter what the cars worth, its just not worth it IMO to drive a car which you know in the back of your mind has a potential problem which you could have ruled out with a few extra £££'s....
