Since fitting the new engine, I have noticed that when braking it can sometimes stall or come close to stalling, now after a search I found out that its is related to the idle control valve (I will change this to the one from the old car as that was fine soon).

Today driving home on the motorway the stop light came on, I was close to a service station so pulled in and turned it off for a while, looked under the bonnet and everything seemed fine (pressed the reset button while I was there).

Left it 5 mins, then tried again, stop light was still there, however with a little rev it faded until it went out. Left the engine running and it stayed off. Was nearly home and it came on again, so did the same, however this time it stayed on. Bugger, I was close to home so continued (yes I know stop means stop before anyone says anything). After a few minutes it turned off and stayed off for the rest of my journey.

Yesterday we changed the thermostat as the car wasnt getting up to temp, when we took out the old one we found out why, it had been hollowed out (spring and valve removed so it was just the frame of the thermostat).

Could this be related to the idle control valve? Or, is it related to the thermostat?

Any ideas please GTi6-ers?

Not related it's just a way to keep the water temp down usually when on track ?

Put a new one in it should be fine ? Also change the green temp sensor on the thermostat housing as this is linked to the ecu and can cause funny idle problems. Also if you get idle problems when turning it could be down to othe power steering sensor ? Located down the front of the engine. Thumbs up

The radiator I have always kept the old engine nice and cool, never got anywhere near 90.

Since putting the new thermostat in its been sitting around 80-85.

Maybe theres an issue with your battery/alternator, reason im saying this is when you rev the engine and the light fades and goes out. Check the voltage of the battery with a multimeter when the engine is running, should be around 14v, if its less then you could have a problem with your alternator.

Considering it now runs at 80-85 it sounds like the new stat has solved your problems.

It has solved the problem of not getting up to temp, but I knew that was fixed, and wasnt the problem that caused this thread Razz

I just included the stat change incase it was a symptom of the STOP light.

Check oil levels, maybe a bit low.

Doh! Sorry I was skim reading the thread....

The common reason the STOP light is shown is when the fan system is playing up. It may be worth checking that the system is functioning as it should. People have been known to solve this issue by changing the brown fan switch sensor in the thermostat housing, as these can become faulty.

In regard to the ICV, try giving it a clean first before buying a new one. Thumbs up

Stan.

I will be swapping my inlet manifold once I have painted up the one from my old engine, I will use the ICV from that as it worked (will still give it a clean though).

Also will try the brown sensor thing too as it stalled a few times on the drive home, luckily a quick dip of clutch brings it back to life lol
