Well my car's in the garage for an issue with the brakes.......

The issue is that when driving along, and i've not braked for say a few minutes, when i do go to brake, if i very slowly depress the pedal the pedal just keeps on travelling and doesn't reach a point where it goes solid then comes into effect and really stops the car.

If i'm doing the same bit of driving and i go to push the pedal pretty fast, the pedal goes so far then goes stiff as it should......

What does this sound like to the knowledgeable people on here?
It's not a case of air in the system, it's been bled a few times, the master cylinder was replaced for a new one only 500 miles ago, the ABS system has been bypassed and it still does it.

The only answer we're coming to is that it's a faulty master cylinder?

Vacuum pump?

I was told a way to test was pump the pedal with engine off till it stiffens, keep your foot on it and start the car, if its ok it should travel back down

N.B i am no mechanic, merely an electrician, my answer is most prob wrong !

You may have a small leak somewhere? My 6 did this and when I traced the lines one of the joints were slightly loose, tightened it up, refilled the fluid and that sorted that.

Not that I can help but I too have the same type of Audi and the brakes are a bit weird. Common thing on these apparently.

Ahh right thanks Ian, my Dad had a different car but same model.....his was spot on, hit the brakes first time i drove it after my nova and nearly went through the screen LOL

I'm stuck with a gutless 206 diesel 5 door until it's fixed, god it's 'orrible! Mostly because it hums in there a bit, and the brakes are almost as bad as the Audi's!

A4 brakes always were very grabby. If they aren't they are not performing as Herr Vorsprung intended.

There is a "common" issue with early A4's, the drain hole blocks in the plenumn chamber under the battery allowing water to fill up the plenumn area, one of the symptoms of this is water getting into the servo, in the winter this freezes and generally plays f*ck with the brakes. If you speak to your local Audi dealer they will deny its a problem, Audi UK won't want to know unless you have a full dealer service history. Best get it into a VAG specialist who will know all about the issue.
