We saw the Toyota version of this car, the GT86 at the Toyota dealer conference last Friday.

Looks good in the flesh. The subaru gets the more powerful engine though...

quote:
Everything about the BRZ is low – its 2.0-litre flat four contributes to a centre of gravity nearer the road than the roof, its bonnet is made from aluminium and its 197bhp and 151lb ft of torque should make this 1220kg two-seater fly.
The transmission is claimed to be a short-shift six-speed manual 'box and - unusually for a Subaru - only the rear axle is driven.

Thats pretty much '6 spec.

Actually got a bit of sick in my mouth looking at that. Whats happened with the back end, did the designer suffer a stroke half way through?

Whilst co-development between manufacturers is nothing new and there are obvious advantages, style wise both the BRZ and GT86 are aweful! I really liked the FT-86 concept, but they've merged the current style philosophies of both companies into one for the finished product and it just doesn't work. Don't be fooled to think that it's just a non-turbo Impreza engine under there too. Yes it's a flat 4, but there's a lot of input from Toyota in the finer elements of the head and bottom end assembly.

Reading the test drives of this car though it seems to handle like a dream. Don't be put off by the power figures - we don't drive 6s and Rallyes because they're rockets in a straight line do we?

This is a lightweight, balanced RWD car which could be a lot of fun to drive. Certainly that's what the mags are saying. It won't be long before the likes of HKS start designing turbo kits for them too...

I thought the turbo version was the STi BRZ? but the standard BRZ will get the same engine as the 86?

For a brand new 2012 era car, I think 1200kg is pretty light actually. Its the dimensions that get me

Is roughly the same size as an mx5..

Are you high? In what way is it "'6 spec" apart from being a similar weight? This thing is [i]completely[i] different to a '6... Crazy

Weight and torque are similar, the extra 30hp is nice, and of course RWD, but compared to some other hot hatches nowadays its not hugely powerful. With last gen M3's going for around £6k this would have to be very special to tempt me.
