Over the weekend in less than 50 miles of driving my <3000-mile old - and still shiny - Klarius exhaust centre box started getting noisy, increasing rapidly to the point where the missus said "why does the car sound strange". Another quick trip up and down the road and the noise level is now positively antisocial.

As related on my project thread I looked underneath expecting to see an easy fix loose joint or similar and saw this instead:

Never seen anything like it before - it is misshapen and noticeably bulging downwards. It looks as though the side seam has failed (see leak marks next to seam) and the heat distorted it as a result of the failure. Luckily it is under warranty but are Klarius exhausts known for this? Should I ask for my money back and go to Pug instead? I didn't really want a pattern exhaust but for a variety of reasons ended up with it.

Any advice most welcome before I go back and talk turkey.

In my experience pattern exhausts tend to be of a much thinner guage than standard and as such have a much shorter life. Having said that, it should last an awful lot longer than it has. What would you go for if you coulld get your money back? (Unlikely as they will probably just supply and fit a replacement)

I'd go for a genuine Pug one if I could, though there was a Bosal centre section on there when I got the car and that was OK even though it was on the way out.

Strange, it looks like the outer 'skin' is streched too tight over the internals, you can see the way its deformed over the baffles, that would certainly seem to explain the seam bursting if it was alredy under excessive tension. Gen pug if you can get it is hard to beat, they have a suprisingly nice gruffly note to them too.

It does look odd, doesn't it? But there is nothing that's happened that I know of to explain it - no impact damage, no blockage, nothing.

Faulty from manufacture would be my guess, it just took a few heat cycles and a bit of stress from bouncing around under the car whilst on the move to pop the seam. They won't have a leg to stand on, it's clearly a case of replacement under warranty/refund.

Thanks, that was exactly what I wanted to hear. I definitely don't want a replacement of the same type - a couple of hundred miles from new there was a slight bit of resonance and it always sounded a bit tinny.
