What's the budget?

Personally I wouldn't go for the Audi S line as far as I can the s line is just different wheels worse suspension and some badges.

What about a skoda? I recently picked up a mk2 diesel Octavia vrs for just over 9k and it's brilliant. Mk1 Fabias are only about 6k now if I didn't need so much room for a pram I'd have got 1 of those.

Probably around the £5k mark all in with my 6 to px/sell. One of my mates has an octavia vrs petrol but i'm not keen on it, too long a car from me and it doesn't go round corners. Anf i find the fabia rather repulsive. The audi has by far the better interior out of the two and i presume the better build quality. Thinkin maybe this.... Click me mo fo!

Looks nice. Bit drug dealer spec but nice lol. I looked at the MK1 Leons when I was looking and they're a good car. I have to agree I found the interiors a little low rent but the exterior especially with the Cupra R style bodykit are nice. I didn't go for it though as I knew I'd always regret not getting the Cupra R.

I have to say I drove the MK1 Octavia on an advanced driving course and I've had a MK2 for a month or so now. I've never had a problem making either go round corners.

Hmmmm, maybe he just can't drive it propperly then lol. I really do like the front end on the MKI FR but the arse is a bit fat n flabby though IMO, and i know what you mean about regretting not getting a cupra R, it'd niggle me. All in all i'm swinging towards the A3.

Definately go for the Seat over the Audi.

I was in a similar position not too long ago, I was looking at things like mk1 Octavia VRs, Golf, Bora, A3 and Leon. The octavia was the best spec of them all but most had lead a hard life.

In the end i got a Toledo V5 20v which has leather/alcantara electric seats, climate control, sat nav etc all as standard plus a lovely 5 pot warble from the engine. I also think the back end looks loads better than the leon that like you say has a funny back end

One of the dealers i visited still has the golf V5 in that i looked at, its nearly twice the price with simlar mileage but cloth seats, manual air con and no sat nav. It's also the lower powered 10v too.

I have no idea why someone would pay over the odds for what is essentially underneath the same car.

If I bought the Seat I would always think "should I have got the Audi?". Not the other way round though.

Definitely the Seat. I love the look of the MK1's so I would say MK1 FR TDi.

Or are you just paying for the badge? Often you'll find an equivalent in the VAG range for cheaper it just depends on if yu can live with the lesser badge. I'm not too kern on the Audi version, the suspension and wheel/tyre options on the sline models tends to lead to a Crashy and uncomfortable ride presumably because the general public think poor ride quality = sporty = expensive = the neighbors will be jelous.

I'm currently in exactly the same position but I have a couple of others in the mix, my list comprises of the mk1 leon tdi fr, a3/a4 tdi s-line, bm 320d coupe and the merc c220 coupe, out of all of them the a3 is currently top closely followed by the bm then the merc and finally the seat. The A3 is far better built then the seat but as said does look a bit boring even in s-line guise. A recent one that has been thrown in the mix is an Alfa gt jtd. Confused

Yeah they are nicer - its not just the badge your paying for the inside is nasty in the Seats. Look at the inside of a Cupra R compared to an S3 (also the standard equipment on them)

Whether its worth the extra or not is down to the individual.

Bit like the xsara VTS / GTI 6 comparison.

Are you going for the 1.9 TDI or the 2.0 timebomb?

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?71723-2.0-TDI-BLB-Engine-Oil-pump-failure

That would be the big worry for me. The 130 / 150BHP 1.9's have a few issues I think but none as serious as the oil pump failure in the 2.0 TDI's

Havent really heard any bad things about the lesser BHP models

TBH im no expert but ive heard nothing but bad things about most modern "performance" diesels, especially the VAG and BMW's.

This is a concern, but it mainly affected the 05/55 registered cars IIRC. Possibly some 06. VW did rectify the problem for engines from 56/07 onwards (roughly) and it's this 'fix' that they upgrade the soon-to-fail/already-failed earlier engines with.

Researched the hell out of it a while back as my mum needed a Passat. I made her get an 07 plate to be sure.

I'd steer well clear of the 05/55/06 plated 2.0 140 TDI's.

Read up on the provided link, and all its associated links, then check the exact engine number/designation code on any car you're thinking of buying to make sure it's one of the safe, later ones.
